Photogenic pets sought for 2004 calendar

VANCEBURG - Does your dog or cat have "star quality?" Is your pet "just the cutest thing around?" Or maybe you have more pictures of Fido than you do of your children.

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, volunteers at the humane society would like to hear from you.

The Lewis County Humane Society is in search of photogenic pets for its 2004 calendar.

As part of its ongoing fund-raising efforts, the humane society will publish a calendar featuring a different pet for each month.

"We want to have pets from Lewis County residents on our calendar," said human society President Brenda Hilger

Interested residents need to send in a photograph of their pet, along with the pet's name and owner's name, address and phone number. There is a $5 entry fee for each pet submitted.

The contest officially begins June 1, but residents can begin submitting entries now to the Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 37, Tollesboro 41189.

"We are still working out some of the details of the contest," said Hilger. "We need to set the contest deadline, establish a publication date and determine if the PETsMART store at Hamburg Place will be involved with the contest judging."

A meeting is scheduled for May 8 to discuss the issues and iron out the final details.

The humane society was founded in 2001 and currently has 75 members.

"We are all volunteers," said Hilger. "We are still trying to get off the ground."

All of the money raised from fund-raisers goes toward future programs, said Hilger. The group is also working to secure a grant from the state, she said.

"We are working with the county and hope to build an animal shelter; we don't have one now," Hilger said. "We also plan to have a spay/neuter program, adoption program and a recovery program at the society."
