Maysville police arrested a North Carolina man Monday on assault charges stemming from a weekend brawl that nearly killed another man.

Maysville Police Detective Ken Fuller said officers arrested James H. Johnson at about 3 p.m. Monday and charged him with first-degree assault.

Johnson is currently lodged in the Mason County Detention Center awaiting arraignment.

Fuller said Johnson, 47, got into an argument with another man Saturday at a residence on East Sixth Street.

The argument became more heated until Johnson allegedly struck a whiskey bottle over the victim's head.

Fuller said Johnson then allegedly cut the victim's head and neck with a piece of the shattered bottle.

Fuller declined to release the name of the victim, who was transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized and then transported to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

"Doctors at the hospital advised police that the victim's injuries were life-threatening," said Fuller, who added that the wounds required about 400 stitches.

Bond has been set at $25,000 for Johnson. First-degree assault is a felony punishable upon conviction by 10-20 years in prison.

Fuller said alcohol is considered a factor in the alleged assault.

In a separate incident, Maysville Police Officer Josh Hicks arrested Tramell T. Henry, 29, on drug possession charges.

Fuller said a warrant for Henry's arrest had been filed April 5 after a traffic stop revealed the presence of two ounces of cocaine in the vehicle Henry was driving.

Police continue to look for another person with Henry at the time of the traffic stop, Derek Overly Jr.
