A 400 mile opportunity: Yard sale is a big chance for buyers and sellers
Thursday, April 28, 2005 9:06 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
It's a yard sale shopper's dream -- 400 miles of antiques, collectibles and stuff will be stretched along U.S. 68 from Maysville to Paducah.

The sale is June 2-5 and begins, according to the way you look at, in Maysville. Tourism Director Duff Giffen said Maysville is not going to miss the opportunity to invite businesses and residents to participate in the event. Also included is a section of U.S. 80, which stretches from Bowling Green to Columbus.

"This is a perfect chance for nonprofit organizations to have their annual yard sale," Giffen said. "They get to keep all the proceeds."

People who want to participate in the sale are encouraged to ask businesses on U.S. 68 for permission to use parking lots or other areas to set up a booth, according to Giffen. She said that just setting up along the highway can be dangerous and may not be allowed by the Department of Highways.

Old Washington has secured the vacant lot across from the Visitors Center for participants. Anyone who wants to sell merchandise there can contact the Visitors Center at 606-759-7423 or Giffen's office at 606-564-9419. Coupons are also available at both locations.

The fee for a 16-foot space is $45, larger spaces no more than 32 feet are $90. Vendors may set up the day before the event.

Almost anything goes when it comes to merchandise, except clothing. The organizers of the event, Western Kentucky Corporation, have eliminated clothing items.

Downtown Maysville will not be left out of the loop. Giffen is encouraging store owners to have sidewalk sales, which can include clothing.

"We need to be open by 7 a.m.," Giffen said. "Last year we missed the opportunity because we didn't know that people start coming through town early."

Restaurants are also encouraged to participate. In Old Washington, the Marshall Keys Tavern, owned by Pat Blumer will offer a variety of lunch dishes for hungry shoppers. The restaurant is located in the basement of Washington Hall and offers a selection of home and decorating items. The main part of the building is stuffed with antiques and collectibles.

Many of those who stop in Maysville come from the Ohio area, Giffen said. They make Maysville their first stop and they want to start early.

Signs for the 400 mile sale are available and cost $5. Contact Giffen's office for more information.

"We want everyone to put up signs that let know the public know they are part of the event," Giffen said.

Old Washington was built along the original U.S. 68 trail, but now is bypassed by the bigger highway. Giffen and Martha Jones, president of Old Washington Inc. want to advertise places in the county where vendors will be.

"We have the space in Old Washington and residents of Washington can set up in their yards," Jones said. "But everybody needs to have signs up."

Last year the event raked in thousands of dollars for vendors, according to the final report released by Western Kentucky Corp. People came from as far away as Ontario, Canada to travel the 400 mile stretch of road and take advantage of the sale.
