First phase of Kentucky 11 work in Fleming County on schedule

FLEMINGSBURG -- Construction on Kentucky 11 is progressing on schedule, according to Phil Mauney, the branch manager for construction for the Kentucky Transportation Department.

The first segment of the two-segmented project should be completed by November, 2004.

Those travelling Kentucky 11 should not be inconvenienced by the ongoing construction, though Mauney said there will be an on-site detour this summer including a lane shift.

"Some of the detours may actually be part of the new construction," he said. The new road will improve access to I-64, as well as improve travel safety for that area by making the roads wider and straighter.

"This is under the governor's commitment to provide safer roads to the public," Mauney said. "When it's all done it will be time-saving as well."

Rep. Mike Denham of Maysville hopes the reconstructed road will hold other appeal as well.

"This is just one step toward economic development for Fleming County and the entire area," Denham said. "With better access to the interstate, companies are more likely to locate here."

Mauney agreed that the new road could entice new businesses to the area.

"The better the road you have to get to a place, the more apt a company is to come to this area," Mauney said.

The Kentucky 11 project has been "in the works" for several years, Mauney said. Rifle Coal Company began reconstructing the portion of Kentucky 11 from 2.5 miles north of Sherburne to 2 miles north of Tilton in December. Reconstruction on the 5.5-mile segment of road includes two bridges and nine box culverts and will cost around $16.2 million.

Rifle Coal Company worked through the winter despite foul weather and Mauney said that he expects no delays to hinder the November deadline.

The second segment of the reconstruction project encompasses a 4-mile section from two miles north of Tilton to the Flemingsburg bypass. This segment, however, is still in design phase. Mauney said that bidding for the project should begin sometime this fall and until then cost for the project is unknown.
