Looking forward to fall fashion

Even though temperatures are still high, cool nights and chilly mornings will be here faster than you can plan what you'll take to the tailgate party before your favorite football team takes the field.

Local stores are filled with fall fashions, even if the last big weekend of summer is still two weeks away.

Labor Day marks the traditional time to put away those white shorts, white sandals and white jeans and replace them with anything colorful.

No matter your age, your body type or the event, there are plenty of choices to keep you in the forefront of fashion. From accessories to a head-to-toe new outfit, a new season brings new opportunities.

You don't have to be 17 to be fashionable.

But you may think differently as you set out to find what the latest trends are.

Nikki Gulley, assistant manager at Cato, probably wasn't even alive when argyle prints were big. This season they're back and can be found on sweaters in every style and color. Laura Rains/Staff
You can find plenty of options on this fashion season's must-have list if you're 17, have a daughter who's 17 or if poodle skirts and saddle oxfords were popular when you were in high school.

You barely walk through the front door of any clothing store and you can tell what's hot in fashion.

"The bling look is in," said Dawahare's manager Greg McCann.

A simple definition for all you children of the 50s -- bling means shiny.

Metallic handbags, jewel trimmed sweaters or sequins on anything means you've got some bling going on.

The good news is the bling look is attainable without much effort because it's everywhere.

If you're a little leery of the look, try looking in the handbag section of the store for your leap into blingdom.

Ed Davis, manager at Maysville Goody's has devoted several areas of his store to the newest look in handbags. Purses made of metallic fabric in silver, bronze, gold, pink and blue are everywhere. You can also find purses covered in sequins and those so subtle, the only flash comes from a metallic thread through the fabric.

Denim never goes out of style, but it does change from time-to-time.

This season denim goes feminine. Embroidery on jeans and a little dazzle trim separates the ladies from the guys.

Distressed jeans are all the rage. The more worn out looking they are, the more they are "in" for fall. Even an appropriately placed hole or two makes them even more desirable.

"The distressed look is one of the must haves of the season," said McCann. "Pair them with your basic white T-shirt or tank and a sequin shrug and you have one of this season's hottest looks."

While his store has plenty of jeans with embroidery touches for juniors, he expects a shipment with similar detailing for misses sizes any day now.

"These jeans have a very feminine look, and they're going to be very big this season," he said.

Ponchos are still popular says Cato manager Kay Owens. But another big look this season is argyle.

Baby boomers know the look of argyle, but for all you in the younger generation, argyle is usually two or more colors arranged in a diamond pattern on a knit fabric.

Cato's has sweaters with an argyle pattern on the front and those with only the argyle pattern on the sleeve. Wherever the diamonds fall, argyle is definitely a must-have for this season.

All the managers agree that the bohemian look that was so popular this spring and summer hasn't lost any of its punch for fall.

"The bohemian style is what everyone comes in here looking for," said Owens.

Ruffled or tiered flowing skirts and ethnic-inspired jewelry and shoes are all the rage.

Today's woman can take a trend and make it her own, whatever her age.

Davis says Goody's realizes that women past their 20s also like to be fashionable.

"Women are used to coming to our store to find their career look," he said. "Now we have a lot of choices for them when they want to go out on the weekend and look more trendy."

The new line is called "So Me, So You." It features scenic circle skirts with several choices for tops, patterned skirts with matching tops with very feminine lines and made from luscious fabrics to name a few.

Owens also says the mens' wear inspired suits for women are big.

Every year the so called fashion experts predict animal prints will be a dying breed, but they keep resurrecting themselves in new and different ways.

So you say you're one in the minority who says they still haven't tried anything in a leopard, tiger or zebra print?

Let this be the season you give in. A leopard belt with your favorite pair of jeans or a zebra-inspired handbag could be just the right amount of animal style needed to win you over.

Finding your own personal style is the key to being fashionable.

If you put it on, look in the mirror and think "Wow!" then you're well on your way.
