'Survivor Party' supports hometown contestant
Tuesday, September 13, 2005 8:12 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
As hometown girl Cindy Hall gets ready to make her debut on the first show of this season's CBS "Survivor: Guatemala," local businesses prepare for a celebration they hope ends only when Hall is the last survivor standing.

O'Rourke's Pub and The Ledger Independent are inviting the public to join them at the Maysville pub on Lower Market Street for a "Survivor" Party Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. The show airs at 8 p.m. Food will be provided by O'Rourke's and will include meatballs, chicken wings and pizza. Although this week's party is a kick-off for the season, O'Rourke's and the newspaper plan to continue the parties until the season ends or Cindy is voted out of the tribe.

The Ledger Independent will have Survivor Cindy T-shirts for sale with all proceeds going to hurricane relief. Shirts are $10 each.

Norbert Gallenstein, owner of the pub, said he is excited about the show. Although he hasn't been a fan, the bar owner is ready to jump into his first season of Survivor.

"If she hangs in there long enough, we're libel to have television shows in here doing shows on her," Gallenstein said.

Over the years, the pub has had special events for University of Kentucky ball games, but this is the first time O'Rourke's has sponsored a weekly party for a television show. Gallenstein said he has a good following for UK games.

"We cook for UK ball games, if they are on the weekend," Gallenstein said. "We get a nice crowd."

The pub is also known for its St. Patrick's Day celebration, but Gallenstein said he didn't think Survivor would overshadow the wearing of the green. However, he expects a big crowd, because Maysville is proud of its "jungle girl" as Hall's mother dubbed her.

"I wish her luck," Gallenstein said.

Ledger Independent Managing Editor Mary Ann Kearns said the party is a way to get the community involved in the show and in showing support for Hall.

"This is a rare opportunity for Maysville to showcase one of its own on national TV," Kearns said. "We are certainly excited to be cohosting the Survivor party with Norbert and hope the community joins us to cheer Cindy on."

Hall graduated from Mason County High School in 1992. After graduation, her family moved to Florida where Hall started working at a zoo. She worked there for 12 years and canoed to work, according to her mother Bonnie Hall.

Hall has a twin sister, Mindy, who lives in the Cincinnati area. According to their mother, the girls, although identical twins, had opposite personalities. Their mother described Mindy as a "girlie girl" while she said Cindy was a "jungle girl."
