Through the window of O'Rourke's Pub, the lights of the Simon Kenton Bridge, the symbol of Maysville, shown as Survivor: Guatemala came to an end filled with mixed feelings.

Maysville native Cindy Hall proved that she could be a contender when she canoed her tribe, Nakum, to the shores of a river where they found their camp. Although Nakum finished the first challenge ahead of competitor Yaxha, they lost the second challenge of the evening and had to vote off a member of their tribe.

Jim, the 63-year-old retired fire captain, who fell victim to physical injury when he broke his arm, was the first person asked to leave the show. Tribe members seemed sorry to see the popular man leave.

Two former Survivor cast members, Stephanie and Bobby Jon greeted the new members of the show at the ruins of a Mayan temple. Bobby Jon joined Tribe Nakum, where early on in the first challenge he became dehydrated and sick.

The two tribes were required to hike 11 miles into the jungle where they would find two camps. The first tribe there could chose the better of the camps along with flint and fire. The hike took 24 hours to complete. Hall said she wanted to get through the hike, but she felt just like Seabiscuit, she couldn't put one foot in front of the other. She kept trying. Her determination paid off and the team finished first.

Once again, Hall found herself at the front of a boat where she steered her team to the shore. However, when the teams were required to move the boat inland in the ancient method of the Mayan people, Hall got her foot trapped. Other incidents in the challenge left Nakum in second place.

O'Rourke's was standing room only as Maysville residents came out to cheer their hometown heroine in the first show of the season. Roger Bloomfield was rooting for Hall all the way.

"I believe it's going to be a pretty good show," Bloomfield said.

Even though several watchers said they had never watched the show they wanted to support Hall. One of those, Joyce Weigott, said she enjoyed watching Hall.

"I want her to do great," Weigott said. "My son works in Louisville. He said everybody knows about Maysville."

After the show ended, Weigott was disappointed that Nakum was the first tribe to vote off a member.

Laura Hughes was upset that Hall's tribe didn't win the second challenge. She wanted Bobby Jon to be voted off.

"I'm so mad they didn't win the second challenge," Hughes said.

Hughes also noted that except for Jim's injury, the younger men were falling prey to dehydration and sickness. Tribe member Judd accepted his illness and continued to work toward winning both challenges.

"I puked. But I got over it and I'm ready to do a back flip," Judd said.

An estimated crowd of 125 were at the pub to join in the party sponsored by O'Rourke's and The Ledger Independent. Next Week the party continues with the second show of the season as Maysville supports their "Jungle Girl."
