Russellville church joins team for hurricane relief

RUSSELLVILLE, Ohio -- One local church, in conjunction with Christians Across America, is taking up donations that will be taken directly to the Bethany World Prayer Center in Baton Rouge, La.
The Russellville Church of Christ plans to leave with supplies on Sept. 28, the first in a series of "assistance trips" bound for a church that is currently housing over 1,000 Hurricane Katrina victims. The church is working with CAA as well as Franklin Graham of Samaritan's Purse.
The Reverend Don Young, who works for the Russellville church as well as being in charge of the CAA, will be responsible for at least the first drive, said Linda Naylor, and chose the area through personal contacts.
"He is president of the bible college at Winston-Salem, N.C., and some of the people in the college knew people in (Baton Rouge)," she said. "He was waiting to find an area that he could go to" that wasn't yet bombarded.
The church collects year round, and takes supplies to areas of Kentucky and West Virginia about every six weeks, said Naylor. The only stumbling block for the Louisiana trip is not the lack of donations, but the lack of transportation down.
"He hasn't found a trailer truck, or driver," said Naylor. "If we don't get a truck or a trailer, he's going to take a two-ton truck and his own personal pickup truck to get the things out."
Another thing that Naylor mentioned is often forgotten is that they often pay for gasoline out of their own pockets. For a trip to Baton Rouge, this could cost upwards of $300-$400.
Along with monetary donations for victims as well as for gasoline, the church is asking for any of the following tangible materials: nonperishable and canned food items, soap, towels, baby formula, garbage bags, toothpaste and brushes, shampoo, men and women's underwear and bottled water. The church in question also is housing a significant number of children, so toys of all kinds and children's magazines and books are also appreciated.
