Cindy survives Party #5
Thursday, October 13, 2005 10:06 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Five weeks and Maysville's Cindy Hall is still standing, although it is on shaky legs. Her tribe's failed attempt to win the first challenge on Thursday's Survivor: Guatemala left the members of Nakum more than a little depressed.

Last week's twist of switching tribe members left Nakum with a broken spirit. Yaxha took the switch better and bounded back to win the first challenge. Tribe members were supposed to cut a rope with a sharp rock, releasing two handles, cut another rope and release two more handles, put those in a slot on a turntable, pull up a sled-like device, jump on, cut the cable and slide to victory.

Farmer Brandon hacked at the ropes while Jamie sawed away. Yaxha grabbed the handles, took them to the turntable, while Jamie continued to saw. Tribe members of Yaxha pulled up the sled, while Jamie continued to saw. The blue team rode to sweet victory, while Jamie continued to saw.

Yaxha won a crocodile-proof swim cage with a deck and deck chairs. To top it off the tribe was served up cool margaritas, guacamole and chips.

Jaime, beyond consoling, took all the blame for the failure.

Marci Curtis, who has been watching the show since it debuted, couldn't believe the strategy Jamie used in cutting the rope.

"Why didn't he try something else?" Marci asked. "He knew the sawing wasn't working."

Even the critical, cynical Judd was at a loss for words, but unlike his past behavior, Judd did come to Jamie's defense.

"We are a team. We can't fall apart," Judd said.

However those words were lost on Cindy when Judd lit into her about not jumping in and helping. By the look on her face, the challenge left the petite zoo keeper feeling just a little angry. According to twin sister, Mindy, Cindy doesn't take a loss or a challenge lightly.

In her visit to Maysville a few weeks ago, Mindy talked about her sister's competitive nature.

Stephanie whined about another team, another loss. She had been on the original Yaxha team, but got caught in the switch. At first she was happy because Yaxha was losing. Now Nakum is falling behind.

"I'm sick of losing," Stephanie said before she broke into tears.

It was Lydia, the fishmonger, who rallied the tribe the next morning with a dance and a speech about getting out there and doing the best they could in the next challenge.

"I feel like a motivator today," Lydia said.

Her song and dance worked. The tribe headed out to the beach where they caught catapulted balls in a net. Nakum easily overcame the curse of the switch and scored the five points to win.

It was Yaxha's turn to vote off a tribe member. Brian, the guy who was voted most loyal to his tribe and was allowed to stay on Yaxha, was the second to be considered, right behind Blake, the frat boy who had pulled at everybody's nerves.

Debbie Vogal, said she thought if Nakum went before tribal council they would likely vote Rafe out of the tribe. But when Yaxha had to vote, Vogal said the strategy could be to make viewers think Blake was at risk while someone else got the boot.

"They set you up to think it is Blake," Vogal said. "But it could be Amy."

When the count was over it was Blake who had his light put out.

"He was the limelight, the frat boy. He got in the way," Curtis said. "I'm proud of Danni she voted him out."

Next week the show continues and so does the party at O'Rourke's Pub. The Ledger Independent is selling T-shirts touting Cindy Hall, proceeds going to Hurricane Katrina victims.
