Be vigilant this Halloween
There are lots of scary things in the world today -- terrorists, North Korea or Iran with a nuclear weapon, $3 a gallon gas, Democrats, Republicans, Democrats who act like Republicans, Republicans who act like Democrats. And the list goes on.
But perhaps nothing is scarier than the dangers our children face each day from those who live in our neighborhoods and, perhaps unknown to us, are convicted sex offenders.
Although there is lots of information out there to help us keep tabs on the offenders such as the Kentucky State Police Web site which provides a county by county list of the offenders' known addresses, we are still often taken by surprise when we find one is living next door to us.
While we should always be vigilant in protecting our children and being aware of where they are and what they are doing, this time of year offers the perfect opportunity for those who want to prey on children to do so. As youngster go door-to-door trick-or-treating they can be particularly vulnerable to the come-ons of anyone wanting to lure them into harm's way.
With that in mind, we would like to offer some tips and some precautions every parent or guardian should follow as children celebrate the Halloween season.
• The best bet is fro an adult to accompany children was they trick or treat. If you can't go, check with another family member, a teen-aged brother or sister or a trusted friend.
• Know the route your children are taking if they are going without you.
• Make sure children do not enter homes or apartments, even when invited.
• Stop only at homes where you know the occupants. Never stop at homes which do not have a porch light turned on.
• Report any suspicious activity to parents or the police.
• Warn your children to never do anything they are uncomfortable doing, even when urged to do so by friends.
A safe and enjoyable Halloween isn't tricky at all. By following a few rules, it can keep our children a real treat.
