Prescription drug bust lands Vanceburg woman in custody

VANCEBURG -- An overnight drug raid by Lewis County Sheriff's Office deputies resulted in the arrest of one woman and the seizure of a large amount of prescription medication.

Lisa Wallace, 29, from Quincy, was arrested Saturday after she allegedly sold five Oxycodone tablets to an informant for the sheriff's office, police said.

Deputy Dwayne Stone said the investigation began around 1 a.m., Feb. 4, after the drugs were sold to the informant. Wallace was arrested around 4:30 a.m.

Deputies allegedly seized several types of prescription pills from the Wallace residence including 266 Soma tablets, 52 Xanax 2 mg. tablets, 323 Lorcet 10s, 93 Oxycodone 30 mg. tablets, 30 Valiums and 180 Disalcid 500 mg tablets, along with $926 in cash.

The sheriff's office estimates the street value of the seized drugs totals more than $10,000, police said.

Wallace was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, police said. She was taken to the Lewis County Detention Center.

Monday, Lewis County sheriff's deputies also arrested Aaron T. Webb, 25, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio after he was found passed out in his car with prescription pills.

Police said they received a call that Webb was passed out behind the wheel of a maroon 1989 Ford Tempo on Butler Hollow Road.

Stone found the vehicle parked on the shoulder of Butler Branch around 10:30 a.m., police said.

As Stone approached the driver's side, he observed Webb holding a plastic baggy in his hands, police said. The baggy contained four Hydrocodone tablets and seven Alprazolam tablets, police said.

Webb was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of a controlled substance, third-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance not in original container, police said.

He was taken to the Lewis County Detention Center; the case was cleared by arrest, police said.

"Prescription drugs are a problem in Lewis County, as well as many other counties," Stone said.

The arrests of Webb and Wallace are part of a "drug crackdown" by the sheriff's office.

Stone said the agency started the drug crackdown in 2003, and it has been hard for the department to stop the trafficking of prescription drugs.

"We are going after the people that are getting the prescriptions and the doctors," Stone said.

Doctor shopping has also made it hard for police to stop the trafficking of prescription drugs.

Stone said alleged drug dealers will go to several different doctors to get the same type of medication, and doctors are unaware that the medication has already been prescribed to that individual.

"Doctors are getting more educated about doctor shopping," Stone said.

A database called KASPER allows police and doctors to have access to prescription information. The database lists the names of patients and what medications have been prescribed to them.

Stone said the database has helped police track drug trafficking.

The sheriff's department has also established a hot line and e-mail account for people to leave information about possible drug trafficking and other forms of criminal activity.

Stone said the department receives 10 to 15 tips each day about criminal activity from residents who do not want to be identified.

Police said anyone who suspects suspicious drug activity should call the sheriff's office drug hot line at 606-796-0123 or e-mail information to tips@lewiscountysheriff.org
