Grocery owner charged with food stamp fraud

VANCEBURG -- A Lewis County grocery store owner has been indicted by a grand jury on six counts of food stamp fraud.
Suzanne H. Himes, 50, owner of Himes Grocery in Tollesboro, allegedly committed food stamp fraud by allowing non-eligible items to be paid for on an electronic benefit transfer card, and, on one count, debiting the EBT card outside the presence of the card holder, according to the indictment.
The indictment was handed down Friday.
Suzanne H. Himes and her husband, Jeffrey Himes, have owned the grocery store since the early 1980s.
Jana R. Doyle, 31, an employee of Himes Grocery, was also indicted by a grand jury Friday on three counts of food stamp fraud.
Other indictments handed down include:
-- Timothy R. Royster, 23, was indicted on first-degree possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
-- Jonathan P. Applegate, 32, was indicted on first-degree fleeing and evading police, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, his second offense, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license and second-degree persistent felony offender.
-- Terry Ray Fulton, 20, was indicted on first-degree promoting contraband for possessing marijuana and dangerous contraband in the Lewis County Jail and public intoxication.
-- Ricky L. Varney, 45, was indicted for trafficking in marijuana over five pounds.
-- Ruby Turner, 27, was indicted on two counts of second-degree forgery.
Turner allegedly forged the names of Kevin Bloomfield and Pauline Burriss, according to the indictment.
-- Donald Shroeder, 51, was indicted on first-degree burglary and two counts of fourth-degree assault.
-- Joe W. Lawhun, 18, was indicted for receiving stolen property over $300, possession of burglar tools, second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and operating a motor vehicle without a license.
-- Timothy R. Lewis Jr., 20, was indicted on first-degree burglary and two counts of receiving stolen property.
-- Shannon L. Keaton, 21, was indicted on first-degree possession of a controlled substance and second-degree persistent felony offender.
-- Christopher Lee Clark, 18, was indicted for misuse of electronic information when he allegedly used the checking account number and routing number of Margene Witten's checking account to pay his cell phone bill, according to the indictment.
-- Charlie Gordon, 22, was indicted for receiving stolen property over $300, possession of burglar tools, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor.
