Museum Center makes modification to name to emphasize regional nature

Amid all the changes the Maysville Museum Center has encountered during the past year, the board of directors voted to add one more to the growing list.

With a new facility under construction, the center will also have a new name. No longer the Maysville Museum Center, it will be known as the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center.

"The new name is necessary to give definition to the museum and research library," said director Dawn Browning.

According to information provided by Lynn David, a researcher with the museum, the old name did not define the museum's location, or the importance of the region. Maysville is considered the "gateway" to Kentucky and south central Ohio.

David said the name reflects the Museum Center's coverage area, which includes five counties in Kentucky and two in Ohio.

"(The board) wanted to let people know it extends past (Mason County) borders," she said.

Browning also said the area is a prime tourist point of entry, and the museum is an excellent destination for learning about the state and the region.

Marc Cates, board president, noted that with the new addition to the museum, a new name is appropriate.

"We will have a new addition to the museum, and all the exciting changes are now reflected in our new name," he said.

The building formerly used by the center, the Hunt building, was torn down last summer. The facility to take its place will be a 33,000-square-foot building with three stories, two above ground and one below.

The project should be completed by spring, 2007 and costs slightly more than $4 million.

The facility will house the museum's extensive collection of historical items and documents. Specifically, the new addition will feature the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures Collections display gallery, a changing exhibit gallery, classrooms, offices, meeting and storage areas and state-of-the-art storage of archival collections.

"It's very exciting," David said.

The building is a "collaborative effort," David said, adding that the challenge of building a home is magnified when trying to build a museum.

"The staff, we're tired," she said. However, she stated they know it will be worth it. She commends the architect and crew working on the building not only for their work, but their enthusiasm, which makes them a joy to work with.

David said they hired a group called the Design Crew from Cincinnati to help the organization redesign its Web site and a new brochure, as well as help market the new name. The museum has also hired a local photographer to take pictures for the brochure.

"We're very pleased with both of these collaborations," she said.

A new sign on Kentucky 9 will soon direct people to the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, and when the new building is complete, David said the name will be displayed boldly on the exterior.
