GPS used to find injured KU employee

BROOKSVILLE -- Kentucky Utility crew members, working on utility lines in Bracken County were caught in the middle of a dilemma when a man was seriously injured at their work location, Thursday afternoon; they were not sure of where they were.

"The problem was that they were not familiar with the county and only knew that they were on Kentucky 875," said Bracken County dispatch coordinator Tony Mains.

After the incident was reported to Bracken E-911 dispatching, Mains kept the crew on the phone line while he radioed for emergency personnel, explained the location dilemma and tried to get more information from the caller, who was very upset, said Mains.

"(Kentucky) 875 is in multiple sections all the way across the county," said Mains. "An off-duty medic went out to look near where he lived and I got to tracking the call on the GPS (Global Positioning System). The caller also mentioned a lawn mower shop near the location. That's when we figured out they were probably on the Asbury Road section of the road. The medic found a truck and then the crew from there. "

Because the caller had been using a Verizon cellular phone system, the position of the call appeared within about 1,500 feet of the caller, who was actually in a field across the road from where the system marked the computer map, said Mains.

"Other systems use a triangulation method that involves three towers, each has it's own advantages," said Mains.

Bracken County EMS took Kentucky Utility employee Jerry Dale Thornsbury of Augusta, to Meadowview Regional Medical Center; he was later transferred to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington where he was listed in fair, but stable condition, Friday.

"A piece of a pole came down and struck him while the crew was working on it," said KU spokesman Cliff Feltham. "An incident investigation team is still looking into the details of what happened."
