Historical book about Brown County published

GEORGETOWN, Ohio -- Husband and wife, Greg and Lisa Haitz of Georgetown, have worked together to compile a book profiling the history of Brown County.

The couple has created a book for Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series, entitled Brown County.

The book contains more than 200 vintage photographs, with extended captions. The photos date back to Brown County's involvement with the Underground Railroad and cover history until the flood of 1937.

The book is broken down into sections which focus on the river, the impact of tobacco, business and industry in the area, art and leisure and important people and places.

Many prominent individuals are featured in the book, including Aunt Jemima (Rosie Riles,) abolitionist John Rankin, jazz trumpeter Joe Smith and many others.

The Haitzs explain, "as someone once said, "history is biography." Many people have fascinating stories in their families to tell that will help illuminate historical events and places."

Knowing this, the Haitzs combined their extensive research with material and information compiled by county residents. Local contributions are noted in the book's acknowledgements section.

"Many local residents, as well as local museums in Brown County helped us dig up information or photos," said the couple.

The Haitzs said they hope "20 years from now, readers will still be referring to our book when they have a local history question, and that current residents of Brown County can be proud of the role their county played in American history."

The books seems to be the perfect project for the couple, who share a mutual love of history and books.

Greg Haitz grew up in Ripley, on his parents farm along Eagle Creek. He attended St. Michael's and Ripley Union Lewis Huntington High School. Greg Haitz has been a social studies teacher at Southern Hills Career Center for 20 years. He was also an adjunct professor at Maysville Community and Technical College for six years. He has a bachelor's degree in social studies and a master's degree in American history.

Lisa Haitz hails from New Jersey, but attended the University of Cincinnati, graduating with a history degree. She currently is the Web master for the University of Cincinnati's University Libraries.

Both Lisa and Greg Haitz are members of Ripley Heritage, Inc. and the Brown County Historical Society. Greg Haitz has also been a trustee of the John P. Parker House.

The coauthors will make a special appearance at the Union Township Library in Ripley on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m., to sign and discuss their new book. The event will be sponsored by Friends of the Library.

The book will first be made available Oct. 30 and may be purchased at area bookstores, independent retailers, online bookstores or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or 888-313-2665. Retail price is $19.99.

According to the publishing company, Arcadia Publishing is "the leading publisher of local and regional history in the United States."
