Semi wrecks, closing highway four hours Wednesday, November 8, 2006 10:24 PM EST
While the driver, Eddie D. Randle of Mount Olivet, survived the wreck unscathed, his trailer and load were scattered along the northbound lane of Kentucky 19 at 7 a.m. "He was very lucky; the tractor did not overturn and he kept it on the road," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Scott Lengle. "His trailer was not as lucky. He was hauling a load of steel wire." Deep muddied ruts along the edge of the highway showed the path the trailer took once it left the highway, chewing asphalt from the edge of the road, tearing down utility lines in its wake and narrowly missing a house before it overturned, dislodged its cargo and came to rest on its side. Crews from Kentucky Utilities were at work restoring the damaged power lines while Kentucky State Highway Department crews helped clear debris from the road and members of Brooksville Volunteer Fire Department helped divert traffic. Heavy lifting equipment had to be transported to the scene by Bradford Towing, including a large track hoe that chomped into the giant spaghetti-like load to remove it from the trailer and field. "It happened about 7 a.m., and they are just beginning to be able to let limited traffic through," Lengle said at 10:30 a.m. Though the driver told officials a deer had been in the highway prior to the crash, Lengle said he believed the tire markings at the scene appeared to show a loss of control near the end of the curve. "Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement inspected the vehicle," said Lengle. "The road is pretty winding through here." Lengle photographed the scene and is continuing to investigate the accident. No charges have been filed at this time.
