Blame it on Maysville

Blame it on us, if you want. We'll gladly take credit for spreading the word about our beautiful downtown area.

We recently published a photo of downtown Maysville, dressed in its holiday finest, taken by Chief Photographer Terry Prather. The picture, taken during a December snow shower, embodied the spirit of small town Christmas so well it could have been plucked from a book of Norman Rockwell paintings. The photo was not only published in The Ledger Independent but also in newspapers across the country after it was picked up by the Associated Press.

Apparently, the photo has caused quite a stir in Lexington where Christmas decorations in the downtown area aren't quite so picturesque as they are in Maysville. Residents of the central Kentucky city want to know why.

In fact, if a photo of the decor featured in a recent edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader are typical, then we pity the city's decorator. Lexington's mayor elect has vowed the current tinsel won't return. Good for him.

In the meantime, we should remember that downtown Maysville isn't transformed into a winter wonderland each year by the push of an "easy" button. The project takes a lot of hard work by city officials and employees who must make a plan and carry it out. Of course, plans without resources are useless so we should also remember, or perhaps blame officials who had the foresight to provide funding to make the transformation possible.

Blame Maysville, if you want Lexington. It's the kind of credit we'll take any day.
