Local museum pieces on display in NYC museum

Four pieces from the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures Collection are on loan from the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center to The Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
The exhibition of the pieces, according to Lynn David with communications and visitors services at the museum center, is "excellent publicity" for the museum center and Mason County.
According to David, many persons are interested in the miniatures exhibit which will be on display at the museum center when the new wing is open.
The four items were loaned to the "prestigious" New York museum, David said, because the artisan responsible for the pieces, Althea Merback, is an "internationally known miniature knitting artisan," and The Museum of Art and Design had opened an exhibit recently entitled "Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting."
The exhibit "explores the phenomenal rise to prominence of knitting, crocheting and lace making in the world of contemporary artists from around the world," according to information provided by David. Merback's "nanoknit" garments are no larger than a human fingertip, according to information from David, and are knitted using fine medical wire as needles.
Items from the KSB Miniatures Collection are a pair of ancient Greek gloves and a Picasso inspired knitted cardigan, as well as other items. The gloves are 3/8 inch to 3/4 inch.
While on display, a card will recognize the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center as the lender, which David termed "good, free advertisement," for the museum center.
Kaye Browning with the museum center travelled to New York City to see the exhibit and attend the International Guild of Miniatures Artisans' New York Miniatures Show and Sale. She was pleased with the interest shown in the miniatures exhibit.
"I was thrilled for the beautifully knitted miniatures items from my collection to be part of this magnificent exhibit and to be recognized as a true art form," she said. "With all of the other amazing pieces on display, I was told everyone came in asking to be directed to the miniatures. This is very exciting, especially for our region and the city of Maysville."
David said miniatures are of so much interest because of the "superb craftsmanship" involved in producing the items.
"They are done in absolute detail," she said. "It boggles your mind."
David said when people visit the miniatures exhibit at the museum center when the new wing is opened, they will experience an "exercise in imagination."
"I just think when this exhibit opens it's going to appeal to a lot of people on a lot of different levels," she said.
The four items loaned to The Museum of Art and Design will remain with the exhibit through June.
