A variety of items, from an autographed CD from Kenny Chesney to a 1995 Oldsmobile, will be auctioned off next week as part of the Maysville Lions Club annual club radio auction.

In its 57th year, the auction benefits a number of local organizations. Last year proceeds from the auction totalled about $34,000, and John Tomlin, chairman of the auction, said the club hopes to exceed that amount this year.

"We always try to top it each year," Tomlin said. "And all of it stays right here in Mason County."

The auction begins Monday and will run through Saturday night on WFTM, 1240 AM and 95.9 FM. It will start each night at 6:30 p.m. and last until about 11 p.m., except Monday night, when it will end at 8 p.m.

More than 600 items will be featured in the radio auction and typically more than 1,000 businesses and individuals take part in the sale, either through bidding for the items or by donating "Bucks for Luck."

The items to be auctioned off include not only the 1995 Oldsmobile from McFarlands GM Center, but a one-hour balloon ride at the Buffalo Trace Balloon Race this summer, as well as various autographed items and donations from local businesses.

Tomlin said he sent out a number of letters to people and organizations asking for donated items, and received numerous replies. In addition to the autographed CD from Kenny Chesney, Tomlin said a book signed by author Dean Koontz will be featured in the auction, as well as a basketball signed by the Dallas Mavericks, an autographed CD and sweatshirt from George Strait, an autographed book from Mary Higgins Clark, and an autographed baseball from baseball Hall of Famer and U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, among other items.

"That's a very nice item for somebody who is a collector," Tomlin said about the baseball.

The funds generated from the auction will benefit organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, Licking Valley Girl Scouts, The Tom Browning Boys & Girls Club, St. Patrick's School, Hospice of Hope, Limestone YMCA, Camp Discovery 2007, Mason County schools, Women's Crisis Center, Mason County RSVP, Mason County Public Library, American Red Cross, Mason County Food Bank, Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, Salvation Army, Shriner's Hospital for Children, as well as other local organizations.

In addition, the money benefits the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and provides free exams and glasses for 112 people in the community.

The Maysville Lions Club got its start in 1927, Tomlin said, and he has been involved since 1985.

"I like the comradery," he said. "I like very much what it does for the community."

The club has 27 members, and anyone is able to join.
