BROOKSVILLE -- With $1.4 million in state funding, Bracken County Water District is gearing up to begin adding about 18 miles of water lines to the district.
"Most of the lines will be new to the areas, with just a few replacement lines being done," said Diana Moran of BCWD.
Getting the project funded was a cooperative effort between Bracken County and Augusta.
"Separately, the individual areas could not afford to do it, but together it is getting done," said Eddie Chinn, water district superintendent.
Project areas begin at the Augusta city limits, said Chinn.
"They include Dover Road, Kentucky 8, Kentucky 435 (Augusta-Minerva Road) and Holts Creek, north of Kentucky 9," said Chinn.
There are some portions of nearby side roads getting BCWD attention.
"Part of Wrangling Run and Tallner Roads are included as well," said Moran.
Getting the project under way has been at the will of the weather and rugged terrain, said Chinn.
"We are in the process of getting the easements together and they are going out and mapping the route. Some of it goes across some pretty rocky terrain when they have to go cross-country between locations," said Chinn.
Though the funds were from 2006 legislative actions, getting the project started marks one of the first big ticket projects to begin during Gary Riggs administration as Bracken County judge-executive.
"The money was just released and I am just tickled to see the extensions being done," said Riggs.
In the 2006 Kentucky legislative session, more than $6.5 million was set aside for projects in the five-county area administered by Buffalo Trace Area Development District, said Doug Padgett, BTADD coordinator.
"It was a nice gift. Funds came from legislative appropriations, KIA funds and capitol improvement included in the 2006 legislative session for water and waste management projects," said Padgett.
The project is strictly for line installations, said Chinn.
"There are no water towers or pump stations like in the last project -- that was a $3 million plus project -- just water lines," Chinn said.
Tilton Excavation of Mount Olivet was awarded the project. The company has worked on BCWD projects in the past and Chinn hopes the new project will be completed by fall.
"It all depends on the weather and what they come up against as they go along," said Chinn.
