MAYSVILLE -- Danny Lee Boyd, 58, devoted to his Lord, his family, his church and his many friends, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, in Maysville. He and his wife of 37 years, Darlene Smith Boyd are longtime residents of Forest Avenue.

He is survived by three daughters, Holly Black, Danni Studebaker (Chad) and Valerie Dunaway (Larry), all of Maysville.

Danny was lovingly known as Poppy to his 11 grandchildren, Amber, Chad Jr., Cody and Colton Studebaker, Brittany and Kaylee Black, Caleb Boyd and Leevi, Christopher, Chandler and Jarrod Dunaway.

He is the son of Ivadene Rankin Boyd of Brooksville and the late Harry Lee Boyd.

Danny is also survived by four brothers, Tim Boyd and Greg Boyd, both of Brooksville, Steve Boyd of Maysville and Bryan Boyd of Mount Orab, Ohio; and two sisters, Sherry Adams of South Shore and Peggy Mastin of Lucasville, Ohio. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lorene Smith of Maysville; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon and Butch Thomas of Mount Olivet.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jeffrey Boyd and Dennis Boyd.

Danny served in the U.S. Army in Wiesbaden, Germany as an air traffic controller from 1968 to 1971. On Nov. 25, 1969, Darlene traveled to Basil, Switzerland where they were married. Danny always regretted his wife was unable to have her family and friends at their wedding so he surprised her on their 15th wedding anniversary with a surprise wedding, including music, flowers, a cake and her original wedding gown.

He worked at Browning EPT for 32 years and after his retirement worked for two years at Green Tokai. He also served as a substitute teacher in the Mason County School system and was currently taking classes at the Maysville Community and Technical College.

Danny was self-taught on the computer and used his skills as the statistician for the Mason County Boys' basketball team for 20 years. He was also an avid supporter of the Mason County Lady Royals softball team and never missed a game, home or away. Recently, he served as a basketball coach at the Tom Browning Boys and Girls Club for his young grandsons' teams.

He also organized a softball team for boys 18 and under in the late 1980s called "Danny's Boys." The team had great success including championships at the Bluegrass Games in 1988-89.

Danny was proud that he was able to set a Christian example for hundreds of young people in this community who played sports.

Away from the gym and ballfield, another passion was playing golf with his many friends.

He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Maysville where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and filled in for the pastor when needed. He also formerly served as pastor at Heselton Baptist Church and Stone Lick Baptist Church.

Services for Danny Boyd will be held at Central Baptist Church at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 6, 2007, with the Rev. Robert Donovan officiating. Words of remembrance will be given by Kelly Wells and Kent Moore.

Burial will follow in the Maysville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Clark, Paul Redmond, Kenny Cracraft, Don Strode, Jerry Johnson and Jeremy Hughes. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Don Underwood and the deacons of Central Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held at the church today from 4 until 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 437 Central Avenue, Maysville, Ky. 41056 or the Gideon's International, Maysville Gideon Camp, PO Box 501, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Arrangements are under the directions of the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home.
