Area communities fired up for the Fourth

Communities in the area will celebrate Independence Day this year with family-friendly fun in the form of music, food and, of course the traditional fireworks.

Some communities will have their celebrations on the Fourth of July, while others are planning them for the weekend before the holiday, on June 29 and 30.

Maysville -- July 4

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the American Queen will dock at Limestone Landing in Maysville. To coincide with the docking, some activities have been moved to earlier in the day on July 4, according to Maysville Tourism Director Duff Giffen.

At 8 a.m., the Knights of Columbus 5K Run will begin at the corner of Limestone and Second streets. At 10 a.m., the Children of the American Revolution will hold its mini-marathon for children, followed by the Patriotic Scavenger Hunt held each year and sponsored by CAR.

At 4:30 p.m., the bicycle decorating contest, sponsored by Wald LLC, will take place at Rotary Park.


The community band will play from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Second Street Mall, Giffen said.

Line-up for the parade is at 5:30 p.m. on East Second Street, and the parade will begin at 6 p.m. Grand Marshall for the parade this year is Bob Hall.

After the parade, everyone is invited to Limestone Landing where they can picnic, or spread out a blanket or lawn chairs to relax. The YMCA will be selling snow cones, Giffen said, and some concession booths will be set up in the area.

Jinges the Clown will be present for children, and Hey Mr. DJ will provide the music.

Fireworks will begin at dusk.

Flemingsburg -- June 30


Fourth of July activities in Flemingsburg will be held mostly in the Flemingsburg Recreation Park on June 30, according to David Doyle, one of the organizers of the event.

Registration for the baby show will be at 11 a.m. at the shelter house in the park, with the show scheduled to begin at noon.

From 4 to 6 p.m., gospel country music will be played at the park.

From 5 to 9 p.m., an antique and classic car cruise-in is scheduled near the horse ring.

Also at 5 p.m., the pork tenderloin dinner with baked beans, cole slaw and other sides will start. A price has not yet been set, Doyle said. There will be a hot dog dinner for the children.

Schwanns ice cream truck will also be at the park beginning at 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m., a cornhole tournament is scheduled at the tennis court.

Bingo will take place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Doyle said there are many prizes available.

Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be free swimming at the rec park pool..

At dark, Doyle said the largest fireworks display Fleming County has ever had will begin by Chuck Tenge and Starlight Fireworks in Hillsboro.

Donations are accepted at the gate of the rec park, Doyle said, and will benefit the park.

The 5K race originally scheduled in Flemingsburg has been cancelled, Doyle said.

Vanceburg -- June 30

The Fourth of July celebration will begin at 8 a.m. in Vanceburg with the Jim Bob Brown Memorial Catfish Tournament at the Vanceburg Fire House on Front Street, and will conclude with a fireworks display at 10 p.m. Various other activities are scheduled throughout the day.

At 10 a.m., the annual baby show will take place on the third floor of the Lewis County Courthouse, followed by the Little Miss and Mister contest at 11 a.m. at the same location.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., community members are invited to bring in their antiques for appraisal by G.M.T. at the visitor center.

At noon, a deejay and karoake will take place at Scott Memorial Park.

A Bluegrass show will begin at 2 p.m., with bands playing in one-hour rotations until the fireworks begin. Featured as part of the show will be Buck Carroll and Breaking New Ground.

From 6 to 10 p.m., a cruise-in will take place in the depot parking lot on Third and Main streets.

At 7 p.m., the Sugar & Spice Girls will perform clogging routines at the Christian Church parking lot.

All vendors are welcome to take part in the day's activities for no setup fee. Free water and electric are provided. For more information call 606-796-3044 or 606-796-2321.

Ripley, Ohio - June 29 and 30

In Ripley, Fourth of July activities begin on Friday, June 29 at 5 p.m. when concession stands open, Poker games and kids' game booths also open. Activities are organized by the Ripley Lions Club.

Also that night from 6 to 7:30, music will be performed by the Cincinnati Dulcimer Society, followed by the Grasstains band from 8 to 11.

On Saturday, June 30, a fishing tournament will begin at 7 a.m.

Sign-up for the cornhole tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m., and at 10 a.m. concession booths will open just as the tournament begins. Kids' game booths will also open and the sign-up for the pie and cake contest is also scheduled in this time slot.

Scheduled at 11 a.m. is the pie and cake judging and auction.

At noon, fishing trophies will be presented followed by a bicycle decorating contest at 1 p.m.

Various kids activities are scheduled at 2 p.m.

Pet show sign-up is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by the actual show at 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m., Poker games begin, as well as the sign-up for the talent show, which starts at 5:30 p.m.

From 8 to 11 p.m., Upfront band will perform.

At approximately 9 p.m., fireworks are scheduled by Starfire Productions.

Mount Olivet -- June 29 and 30

Kicking off the string of activities planned for the Fourth of July holiday will be a terrapin race in Mount Olivet on June 29, a race which has traditionally been held on a Saturday. Kentucky Living magazine will be present to cover the race, according to organizers.

All activities scheduled in Mount Olivet will take place on or around Court Street.

At 6 p.m. on that Friday a pedal tractor pull is scheduled, followed by the baby show at 6:30 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the Flat Creek Band will begin to play, and the Euchre tournament will also begin.

From 8:30 to 11 p.m. the Country Tap cloggers will perform.

On Saturday, activities will begin at 2 p.m. with a motorcycle cruise-in.

Line-up for the parade is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Deming High School, and the parade will begin at 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m., M&M inflatables is scheduled.

The Country Tap cloggers will perform a second time beginning at 8:30 p.m.

A drawing for free prizes will begin at 10:30 p.m. and people must be present to win.

The fireworks show will begin at 11 p.m., weather permitting.

West Union, Ohio -- July 4

In West Union, the Lions Parade will form at 9 a.m., and the parade and celebration will begin at 10 a.m.

Augusta -- July 3 and 4

The annual fire engine ride will begin at 5 p.m. on July 3 at the Augusta River Park.

There will also be food available, including fish, hamburgers and hot dogs on July 3 and 4 at 4 p.m. at the park, along with bingo.

At 10 p.m. on July 4, fireworks are scheduled to begin, presented by the Augusta firefighters.

" I agree with JW. Everyday we should honor those killed or wounded in combat and it makes me upset that no one in this particular area actually cares for those troops deployed. The military is not a joke. To you who wear camoflauge clothing and are non military, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Camoflauge should be left to the real HEROES, our men and women in the US Military. "

" It is interesting and dissapointing to see many events to celebrate independance day, But not one event to acknolage our fallen or injuried soliders in past wars and the ones deployed at this time. " It would have been nice if Maysville thought to have their festivities on the weekend, instead of during the week. Even though most people are off on the 4th, most have to return to work the next day..and some of us have to work the entire week (including the 4th) and will miss it altogether. "
