WING -- Get ready for the aroma of cotton candy, burgers, sausages of all nationalities and foods of every kind as vendors fill frying vats and ice chests in preparation of weeks of fairs and festivals in our area. With bragging rights on the line, area livestock producers, crafters, cooks and entertainers are gearing up for the July fair season.
A zoo full of elephant ears and towers of funnel cakes will leave young and old alike covered in powdered sugar and coming back for more.
And more there are.
Beginning with the Ewing-Fleming County Fair, July 9-14, visitors will have 12 hours a day, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m., to visit agricultural and craft exhibits, watch prize livestock vie for top honors and experience the talent of local equine enthusiasts who will be participating in several classes of horse shows.
A future Miss Kentucky may come from the growing crop of young ladies competing in the Little Miss Teen, Miss Teen Kentucky and Miss Kentucky County Fair pageants. The Little Misters and Mr. County Fair are also strutting their stuff during their competitions.
A variety of carnival rides will also give visitors a chance for a whirl.
For some noise there is always the tractor pull, garden tractor pull or demolition derby to get hearts thumping.

On the heels of this fair falls the Adams County Fair, July 15-21, at Adams County Fairgrounds in West Union, Ohio. Hundreds of animals will be on hand, along with their keepers for qualifying rounds that will allow local children to participate in the Ohio State Fair later in the summer. Classes are scheduled throughout each day at various arenas on the grounds.
The Pig Scramble, a crowd pleaser, is scheduled for July 16. In three categories from ages 8-18 qualifiers will be out to tackle their squealing prey. The pork will fly at 8 p.m. at the Junior Fair Livestock arena.
Live entertainment is scheduled, including local favorite Steve Parks and Longshot, and nationally recognized country music entertainer Sammy Kershaw.

Tollesboro Lion's Fair and Horse Show follows, on July 20-27 at the Tollesboro fairgrounds, with horse shows July 20-21, parade July 22 and fair activities July 23-27. For information call 606-798-2421.
The Olde Reliable Germantown Fair wraps up July and slides into August with fair activities planned July 30- Aug. 4.
In operation since 1854, it is one of Kentucky's oldest fairs filled with a variety of equine, and livestock competitions, plus pageants and entertainment for young and old.
