East-West Senior Bowl on tap for Friday in Mt. Sterling

Mason County Middle School football coach Tom Posey is enjoying a very busy spring.
Along with his duties at the middle school, Posey is also an assistant coach with the Huntington Heroes of the American Indoor Football Association.
As if that weren't enough, Posey has also been busy organizing the second annual East-West Senior Bowl, which features graduating football players from area schools.
That game takes place Friday evening at 7:30 at Montgomery County High School in Mt. Sterling and Posey is excited about the showcase event.
"I love doing this and it's been a very enjoyable week," Posey said. "If we can get one player signed to a scholarship, then all the work is worthwhile. I'm hoping for a good turnout and with all of the schools represented, I expect another good crowd. I would just like to say good luck to both teams and the coaches have been a pleasure to work with. The East's Ivan McGlone of Russell and the West's Dan Gooch are both class individuals who do things the right way. The kids are having a great time and it's healthy to have rival schools' players become teammates for this game. They discover that the other side isn't all that bad and this is something these kids will remember for the rest of their lives."
Last year's bowl game was played in Ashland at Fairview High School and was very well-attended, especially for an inaugural contest. It was also a competitive game, with the East All-Stars coming from behind for a 38-21 victory.
The West All-Stars feature several players from area high schools.
Included on the team are Mason County's Stephen Howell, Chris Marshall, David Robb and Richard Wells. Fleming County will be represented by Jesse Burriss, Bailey Ellison, Bradley McIntyre, Cory Moore and Jesse Roberts. The Lewis County contingent includes Anthony Boyer, Chad Dyer and D. J. Jordan.
Assisting Gooch with the coaching duties will be Fleming County head coach Gene Peterson and Mason County assistant coach Chris Ullery as part of the West staff.
One school that is benefitting from the game is Kentucky Christian University, where coach Dane Damron is getting a football program started at the Grayson school.
"Dane is an outstanding football coach and KCU is giving a lot of kids an opportunity that they wouldn't have had previously," said Posey.
Fifteen players in this year's game have already committed to play at KCU and Damron is hoping to sign more in the near future.
Other college coaches will also be at the game and observing the talent on hand.
Posey's recent new venture has been his foray into professional football as the special teams and linebackers coach for the Heroes, who have a playoff game tonight at Canton, Ohio, against the Canton Legends. Huntington fell to the Legends last Friday in a hard-fought, 52-50 contest.
"We're very hopeful that we can beat Canton and if we do, we will play on the road next week against the Reading (Pa.) Express," added Posey.
Posey, who will be entering his fifth season as the MCMS head coach, has thoroughly enjoyed his first year with the Heroes.
"It's been an awesome experience, I've learned a great deal and I also feel it's made me a better football coach," Posey said. "They have already asked me to come back next year as well."
He also encourages any and all high school football fans to come out Friday evening to support the young men, many of whom who will be playing organized football for the final time, while others hope to catch a coach's eye and continue their careers at the next level. |
