Buffalo Trace Balloon Race entertainment will offer something for everyone
Entertainment will come at visitors from all sides Aug. 17 and 18 during the Bluegrass Satellite and Security Buffalo Trace Balloon Race.
The first-ever event of its kind in this area will be held on the campus of Maysville Community and Technical College.
Stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, balloon artists, face painters and more make up Cincinnati’s Amazing Portable Circus. Under the direction of Dave Willacker, the circus performs at over 500 venues a year, including shows for the Cincinnati Reds and the Final Four Championship.
Kentucky native Artie Dean Harris’s career has taken him from Broadway to Hollywood. With songs such as "What's In Her Genes," "Tractor Factor" and crowd favorite "Jim, Jack & Jose," Harris will bring a little bit of honky tonk to the Ohio Valley, as well as a lot of energy.
"I am always disappointed to purchase a concert ticket only to see an artist stand there and tap his toe,” Harris said. “What's the excitement in that? I feel it is important to make sure everyone that attends my show is having as much fun as I am.” Harris will perform Friday night at 7:30.
A high-flying act with a local connection is the Gravity Clowns skydiving team. Maysville’s Dr. LeRoy Gallenstein is a member of the group which, according to team member Paul Robards, has made a combined 10,000 skydives. The team has performed at events ranging from stadium openings to Thunder Over Louisville. Robards recently visited Maysville and likes what he sees.
“It’s apparent all the work that’s been done on this (event),” Robards said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
The skydivers will jump while unfurling a 700 square foot American flag, as well as play what is known as “sky bingo,” where the skydivers land on plates purchased by visitors to the Balloon Race. The Gravity Clowns will perform at 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
A bizarre set of circumstances before a New Years Eve show in 1976 was the start for band Midnight Special, which will perform Saturday night at 7:30. That holiday, two Cincinnati bands where scheduled to perform together — but only one member from each band showed up. Founding members Gregg St.Charles and Joey Von Richter found some other musicians to help cover the night, beginning a group that would come and go for the next 30 years. Midnight Special is one of the country's premier rock and roll shows.
Dover Creek is a brand new bluegrass-gospel group from northern Kentucky that features a lot of local talent, including Tracey Cassidy, Wayne Vickers, Patricia Riggs and Jerry and Christina Bothman. Group members have performed in other bands such as Peach Mountain, Godspeed and Revelation. Dover Creek’s fresh new sound can be heard Saturday at 1:30 p m.
The group Inside Out describes its music as “Southern Fried Twang.” Since 1991, Inside Out has performed an energetic mix of country, classic rock, oldies, rock and roll and pop, as well as original compositions. Over the years, the band has opened for acts ranging from George Jones to Montgomery Gentry. You can become a member of its fan base, called the “Twang Gang,” when you hear Inside Out perform Saturday at 4 p.m.
Add in performances by the Sugar and Spice Cloggers Saturday at 4:15, Centre Academy at 5 p.m., and strolling musicians throughout the event, and the Buffalo Trace Balloon Race guarantees a good time for all.
