FLEMINGSBURG -- Members of the Flemingsburg Police Department confiscated more than six pounds of marijuana in a drug bust Thursday at a residence on Wallingford Road.

According to Flemingsburg Police Officer Falon Fugett, Jeremy D. Flanery, 27, of 1080 Wallingford Road was arrested at his mother's home after police located the marijuana stuffed into a backpack, under a couch and inside a coffee table in the basement of the home.

Fugett said $600 in cash and Flanery's 1993 Cadillac were also confiscated during the bust, which was conducted by Flemingsburg Police Chief Randy Sergent, FPD Officer Chad Bowling and Fugett.

According to officials, the police department has received complaints and tips for the last year involving Flanery's activity from the home on Wallingford Road. Within the last six months, more reliable information provided to officials led to Flanery's arrest Thursday.

"We received a tip there was a large quantity of marijuana in the house. We received consent to search (the house) from the tenant of the home. She was very cooperative," Fugett said. "Upon searching the basement, we found a backpack containing a lot of marijuana in it and we placed Flanery under arrest."

Fugett said after the first bags of marijuana were found, the Maysville Police Department was contacted with a request to send MPD Officer Jeff Hord and his drug dog, Misho to the home to conduct an additional search of the property.

It was during the search conducted by Hord and Misho that additional bags of marijuana were found under a couch and inside a coffee table.

"Misho was very instrumental in finding the additional marijuana," said Fugett.

Officials said Misho was also used to search Flanery's Cadillac, which revealed the spare tire had been removed from its compartment in the trunk and a garbage bag, duct tape and cigar leaves where found inside the compartment instead. Fugett said plastic bags, duct tape, cigar leaves and sometimes coffee grounds, are used to mask the odor of marijuana while being transported in a vehicle.

"Myself and Officer Bowling have been working on this for quite awhile," Fugett said of the investigation.

Bowling said the marijuana has an estimated street value of $8,000 and it is believed to have been transported into the area from North Carolina.

Flanery has been charged with trafficking in marijuana, five pounds or more, a class C felony which carries a penalty of five to 10 years; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently lodged in the Mason County Detention Center. Bond had not been established at press time.

" If they want to find drug activity the really should go to Vanceburg again, but try to arrest some differant people. Always the same ones over and over seems like the rest are protected or maybe informants . Informants can do ,sell, or do anything they please. Same way down on cabin creek I listened to a bust on the scanner and no charges were ever filled. Not everyone that get's pain med.s are doing something wrong some people actually need there med.s , but you better have a safe if you do and any of these people see you at the Dr. start worrying bout people breaking in your home. " Just now read the article, Great job Officer Fugett, your one of my favorite, people. I do not believe that people in general should worry about the relationship between the mayor and his police officers. They have a wonderful working relationship from what I have observed. Mr. Flannery is a wonderful person and does his job well. He nor anyone else for that matter cannot help or foresee what a family member may or may not do. That's just life. What about Fleming County getting their own K-9 unit? It's greatly needed. "

" The last time a Flemingsburg police officer arrested one of the Mayor of Flemingsburg's kin folks, the officer ended up losing his job. I hope that is not the case with this arrest. This alleged criminal is the Mayor's grandson. Congrates to the Ledger for actually printing the story, but you should dig a little for the rest of the story and see if the bust will affect the relationship between city officers and the mayor of the city that's what people realy want to know. Besides its not Maysville we're talking about so theres no need to worry about getting fired for doing your job. It's just Flemingsburg. "

" I wish the Lewis Co. police would do something about all the drugs in Tollesboro, and Garrison. There is more drugs in those areas than 4 th street I bet. It is a shame the law cannt catch these people dealing them. Maybe the DEA needs to keep a closer eye on the doctors who are giving out these drugs to people that are out here selling there meds to these young people. "

" To drew b., If you think taking drugs off of our streets is a waste of time, then you probably do NOT have children. There are so many pressures on children these days, by other kids, to "try this" , and taking this quantity of drugs of the street is wonderful, not a waste of tax payer's dollars! "

" I too want to congratulate the police on this bust! Further, in response to another's comments: Marijuana is illegal, and the effects of the drug put other people's lives at risk. It is not harmless (natural substance or not) and I hope that someday our entire society is intelligent enough to know the dangers, health affects, and impacts that the use of these drugs can have, not only on the user, but to those who inadvertently get in the path of the users, and not to mention the genetic abnormalities that may be passed on to the unborn children of the users. Note to "drew b": Cyanide, arsenic, and strychnine are naturally occurring substances as well; doesn't mean they can't kill you. "

" I wished the police would come to Dover and take a look around. It wouldnt take long to figure out who are the drug pushers & they have been doing it for yrs and yrs. Come on down on Johnson & Lucretia Streets and you'll be able to find them straight off. "

drew b. wrote on Aug 16, 2007 3:06 AM:

" Wasting tax payer's dollars on small-time drugs like this advance us nowhere, fast. This young man will most likely recieve a stiff sentence. His impending lock up will require us to release a prisoner of a more severe nature and penalty, i.e. Rapist, Child abuser/Molester, etc. To all of the supposed police officers out there: Take the fight to crimes that really affect our society. Don't waste your time and effort creating things to do. Real cops don't mess with 6 pounds of a natural substance. "
