FLEMINGSBURG -- An early morning fire in downtown Flemingsburg destroyed the upper floor of the Stop and Save Consignment Store on East Water Street.

The second story of the building, known to many local residents as the old Sundry Store, was being renovated into apartments by the building's owner, David Collins.

The Stop and Save Consignment store, located on the ground floor of the building, is owned by Montina Littleton who was at the scene Monday morning, watching as firefighters extinguished hot spots in the attic of the building.

Littleton, who has owned the business for six years, said she carries insurance on the contents of her store, but couldn't give an estimated value of how much inventory she had in the store, noting she had everything from clothing to books to appliances.

Littleton said the last time she was in the store was Saturday evening and when she arrived on the scene of the fire at 7:30 a.m., flames were coming out of the roof of the structure.

"They said it's mostly contained to the upstairs, but we've got a lot of water damage," said Littleton as she watched firefighters spray water on hot spots in the attic of the building.

According to Flemingsburg Fire Chief Jerry McCloud, the fire was contained to the second story and attic of the building, but the consignment store on the ground floor suffered "severe water and smoke damage."

McCloud said the fire alarm went off around 6:30 a.m. and "it took about an hour and a half to get it contained and under control."

"We were lucky to get it stopped when we did," said McCloud.

The fire started in the floor on the second story of the building and followed a path into a closet housing a water heater and air conditioning unit; from there the fire proceeded to the attic, McCloud said.

"The major part was in the ceiling of the second floor and the attic area," said McCloud.

The state fire marshal's office has been called to investigate the cause of the blaze, which McCloud said could have been caused by the electrical system, since there were no working appliances in use on the second floor.

The second story windows of the building were broken out by firefighters in their efforts to gain access to the second story to spray water onto the flames and to allow ventilation of the building. Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters entered the building and stationed themselves on the second floor to spray hot spots in the attic. The sidewalk in front of the building was littered with bricks, broken glass, insulation and pieces of tin from the building's facade.

"I would assume everything was a total loss," said McCloud of the building and the store's contents.

The Flemingsburg Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by the Ewing, Hillsboro and Mount Carmel volunteer fire departments.
