Low turnout predicted in Adams County

WEST UNION, Ohio -- Undeclared voters hold the key to decisions in Adams County today.

Of the 17,191 registered voters in Adams County, 9,982 are nondeclared, 2,334 are registered as Democrat and 4,875 are registered as Republican.

"In some cases, they just didn't want to be affiliated with a party so they registered as 'other,'" said Stephanie Thompson, Adams County Board of Elections director.

Other voters may have never voted before or not in a primary so they are counted as "other," said Thompson.

Even with three levies on the county ballot, and many local village and township seats at stake, voter turn out is predicted to be light, said Thompson.

"If I could base it on the number of absentee ballots we received, I would say voter turnout will be a little low," said Thompson.

As of 2:30 p.m., on Monday, only 767 absentee ballots had been received at the board office.

Hot topics in the area may bring in a few more voters, said Thompson.

"We have one township where nobody is on the ballot for fiscal officer. There are four write-in candidates in Meigs Township campaigning for the job. That will be interesting," said Thompson.

In Manchester, two former mayors, the incumbent mayor and a councilman are all vying for the mayoral seat.

Mayors offices are also on the line in Cherry Fork, Peebles, Seaman, West Union and Winchester, though Cherry Fork and Peebles races are uncontested.

A levy for the Appalachian HOPE van renewal is also on the county ballot. The van levy is a 0.16 mill renewal. The van brings diagnostic information, nutritional counseling and health education to residents across Adams County.

"You just never know what will motivate someone to come out and vote," said Thompson.

On Monday, Thompson and her staff were busy maintaining regular office duties while delivering voting machines to the 23 precincts in the county.

"We are hoping to have some information on the results available by 9:30 p.m.," said Thompson.
