VANCEBURG -- A three-vehicle accident on Kentucky 10 in Lewis County Friday evening took the life of a Vanceburg resident, according to Kentucky State Police.

Units from the Kentucky State Police, Morehead Post, were aided in responding to the accident by Lewis County EMS, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office and the Lewis County Coroner's office.

Florence Carolyn McCann, 62, of Vanceburg died at 8:10 p.m., as a result of her injuries sustained from being ejected from her vehicle, police said.

According to KSP, a 2000 Hyundai Sonata driven by Kevin Bare, 43, of Quincy, was traveling west on the highway in Lewis County when it crossed the center line, striking McCann's vehicle head on.

Reports indicate after the initial collision, a 2001 Kia Van driven by William Hankins Jr, 28, of Flatwoods, hit Bare's vehicle before coming to rest in the median.

McCann was driving a 1991 Ford Mustang at the time of the incident and, according to reports, was ejected from that vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos.

Steve McCann, 40, Florence McCann's son, was also in the vehicle and sustained injuries. Both Steve McCann and Bare were transferred to Cabell Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

Linda Toller of Vanceburg, another passenger in the McCann vehicle, was transported to Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for treatment of injuries she suffered in the accident.

Alesha Hankins, 27, a passenger in William Hankins Jr.'s vehicle was transferred to Our Lady of Bellfonte Hospital in Ashland.

Conditions on the victims were not available Sunday.

According to police, the McCanns, the Hankins and Toller were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the KSP Detective Larry Bowling.

" wearing your seat belt can save lives but they may cause deaths also.. I have had 2 family members to die as a result of not being able to get the belt unfastened. They were upside down in 4 ft. of water when they hydroplaned into a creek in ohio. the child was 13 and her mother was only 35. Yes seat belts do save many lives, but there is always the flip side of the issue....they make a saftey hammer that i carry in my car at all times now. it mounts to the floor and can break a window out if you are trapped and also has a knife built into it to cut the belts if they are stuck....please drive safely.. "

" I was so sorry to hear about Florence McCann's terrible auto accident and that she died on Friday, my thoughts and prayers go out to her family and everyone that was in that accident. But was totally shocked to read that NONE of them were wearing their seat belts. WEARING YOUR SEAT BELT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE! If you get into the habit of putting it on it feels like something is missing when you don't wear it. Please wear your seat belt and make sure your children do too. "
