Car hits crane, killing driver
Monday, December 10, 2007 9:28 PM EST Print this story | Email this story
A Vanceburg man who was on his way to work in Maysville, Monday morning died when his car struck a crane, police said.

Garrett C, Wilson III, 43, was driving west on Springdale Road when he crested a hill and apparently lost control of his 1990 Ford Mustang, police said.

In Wilson's path was a 1999 Grove mobile crane, belonging to Maxim Company, based in northern Kentucky, said Mason County Deputy Tim Nolder.

"It was one of those huge cranes, 147,000 pounds of crane with numerous wheels," said Nolder. "It was being transported to a job at Dravo (Carmuese Lime). When he hit it, the crane was in motion."

The crane's structure made it ride high off the road and Wilson's vehicle apparently skidded under the crane, though the crane tires did not run over his vehicle.

"It sustained substantial damage when it apparently bounced off the crane. Mr. Wilson suffered several head traumas," said Nolder.

According to Mason County Coroner Bob Brothers, Wilson died of blunt force trauma at the scene.

Wilson's wife told officials he had left for work at Tom Jones Body Shop at about 8 a.m.; the accident happened at 8:35 a.m., said Nolder.

Emergency units from Orangeburg Volunteer Fire Department and Maysville/Mason County EMS responded to the scene along with Mason County deputies.

Wilson, a husband and father, liked to tinker with his cars, said Tom Jones, owner of Tom Jones Body Shop.

"It's a shame, he has been working here a few years. He liked his cars," said Jones. "He also liked a band he was helping. He had been going around with them on weekends and helping them set up -- he was always talking about that -- and he started to play keyboard with them sometimes."

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.

" I'm not familiar with that stretch of road but what bothers me is where were the escort vehicles that protect the front and rear of mobile cranes such as this. Sounds like a lawsuit just begging to happen! "

" Lost control? I doubt that Mr. Wilson had anywhere to go when he came around that curve and there was that big wide mobile crane. Much too wide of a load to be on a road like Springdale road, especially with no caution ahead of it to warn other vehicles that a wide load was approaching. His family is in my prayers. May God comfort you in your loss. "
