Life support removed, Georgetown man dies

GEORGETOWN, Ohio -- Clyde Horn, a Georgetown resident, died Saturday evening from injuries he sustained in a malicious Dec. 24 beating police said was at the hands of two juveniles in Higginsport, Ohio.
William Horn said Monday that his brother lived for some time after life support was removed.
"Clyde held on and struggled for 37 hours after we removed life support Friday evening. That's who he was, that's what he was, a fighter, and those two took him away from us," William Horn said.
Horn was the victim of a brutal assault outside the Hi Port Bar in Higginsport in the early hours of Christmas Eve. According to family members, witnesses, and officials with the case, Horn was attacked by two juveniles, one wielding a baseball bat and the other a mallet, outside the bar after he allegedly aided a bar employee in removing the two juveniles from the premises earlier in the evening.
Following the attack, Horn was taken by Air Care to University of Cincinnati Hospital where he eventually suffered the first of four strokes that left him in a permanent vegetative state which induced the family to cease life support.
The two juveniles, ages 15 and 16, were arrested and initially charged with felonious assault until Horn's condition was ultimately determined.
Brown County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas F. Grennan said in an interview Monday, "We had previously filed a motion with the court to bind over the two juveniles to try them as adults. The age of 16 is a mandatory bind-over in this case. An individual charged at the age of 15 is determined a discretionary bind-over. In other words, it will be at the discretion of the court as to whether the juvenile should be charged as an adult with factors such as the crime, and whether or not continued juvenile programs are determined to be beneficial to the youth."
Grennan continued, "Today, with the new circumstances surrounding the case with Mr. Horn's death Saturday night, we filed a motion to upgrade the charges against the two from felonious assault to murder under Ohio's statute 2903.02b. Until a decision is determined on trying the two as adults, the proceedings will be closed to the public because of their juvenile status."
"Clyde passed on at 11:40 p.m. Saturday night," William Horn said. "We have been in contact with the sheriff's department and the prosecutor's office. They have been really good at keeping us in the loop. We just hope justice is served. We want them to pay for what they have done. Clyde was a caring, warm-hearted man and they have taken him from us."
According to William Horn, a visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and the funeral will be held the following day at 11 a.m., both at EC Nurre Funeral Home in Bethel, Ohio.
Horn also said he and his family are organizing a benefit to help with Clyde's expenses. The benefit will be held from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the American Legion in Felicity. Admission is $10 for adults, $15 for couples. Organizers are planning to include food, music, raffles, an auction and other attractions.
