Wells could be facing five years

MOUNT OLIVET -- With her trial on six counts of rape looming on March 11, Crystal Wells, 33, of Carlisle, accepted a plea offer during a pretrial appearance before Circuit Court Judge Robert McGinnis in Robertson Circuit Court, Monday.

Wells, a former Robertson County/Deming middle school teacher and married mother of two small children, pleaded guilty to amended charges of unlawful transaction with a minor on each count.

In December 2007 Wells was indicted based on her alleged sexual relationship with a minor male student, which took place off school property, police said.

Prior to the indictment, only text message incidents during school time were acted on by school officials. Allegedly more than 3,000 text messages may have been exchanged between Wells and the boy. According to minutes of the October 2007 Deming school board meeting, the board approved the Sept. 17, 2007, minutes which listed Wells as suspended without pay for one week and with pay for a second week, Aug. 27-Sept. 7, 2007.

In November 2007 as the investigation by Kentucky State Police into the relationship was opened, Wells resigned from her job at Deming.

It was also alleged by investigators Wells had provided the boy with another cellular phone to communicate with her, after the text incident was discovered; a computer disc was being compiled by Kentucky State Police investigators, containing text messages between the two, officials said in Wells' January 2008 arraignment. A sexual relationship was the basis of the indictments, spanning at least six incidents in 2007.

A formal sentencing date has been set for April 14, at 9 a.m.; if the agreed plea sentence is imposed, Wells could spend five years in jail on each count, to run concurrent for a total of five years, court officials said.

Wells remains free on $10,000 bond until her sentencing.

" "The idea of consent is so ridiculous. As students, it is not our job to know better-it is the teachers' job. It's their job to take care of us and guide us-not exploit us. It is never the students' fault. We are young and we are learning. We are expected to know better when it comes to Math and English. Why should we be expected to know more on the issue of sexuality?" " Don't judge people until you have walked in their shoes! I personally know Crystal Wells and know that she is a good person and a great mother. "

" I'm just glad this kind of crime is finally coming to light. And it most definitely is a crime. This happened when I was at Mason County. It was common knowledge among the students. And I mean male and female teachers alike. I'm not saying they were all degenerates, but it happened nonetheless. I feel as though some turned a blind eye to it. "

" Finally someone feels the same way that I do about Deming Schools administration. They feel that things of this nature are not significant enough to warrant appropriate action. So instead of waiting and wondering if they are going to do anything, it is left up to the parents to do what is necessary and take matters into their own hands. So I applaud the parents that do and to let the schools administration know that their decisions on such matters aren't good enough and that they will suffer the consequences as well as the perpetrator. "

" If the School Board does not have the ability to hold the Administration responsible than who can? someone needs to check on the state level. An investigation into any wrong doing by the Administration must be conducted. We owe this to the victim, his family and the students and parents at Deming. For far too long Robertson County Schools have had their own set of rules for dealing with issues. I don't believe that consolidation is the answer like John suggested but it needs the attention of a higher power. "

" Most of the charges for the molestation happened AFTER she was returned to work. The state police should have been called, social services should have been called...not just given time off to let it all go away like the administration of this school always does. Since the principal change it seems like the school has fallen to its lowest point ever. It may be time to start thinking about consolidating with other counties to be sure children are in properly run school systems. I also feel charges or loss of jobs at the administration level should happen. "

" 5 years!!! What a joke. She will never do 5 years. She will probably spend a few months in the local jail and then be released. If she had been "teaching" and I use the word lightly in her case, in another county, she would have been punished more severely. "

" To Deming Fan: It may take two to tango, but it is ALWAYS the adult's responsibility to take control of the situation and NOT behave as Wells did. She made a huge error in judgment and now she must pay the consequences. "

" What average inquisitive teen boy, wouldn't be a "willing" participant? They haven't developed a reasonable ability to discern between a sexual encounter and being sexually abused. She should be ashamed to represent herself as a mother of 2 children and I certainly hope she isn't allowed to impress her "morality" on her children. "

" I always hate when I hear of a dark cloud like this one over ANY school district. It is hard enough policing children let alone teachers and staff. What it boils down to is that ANY teachers knows better. Keep your chin up Deming other school systems are praying for you! "

Deming Fan wrote on Mar 4, 2008 5:24 AM:

" While I agree that Ms. Wells bears the greater responsibility here being the adult I cannot help but believe that the male involved should face some responsibility. Since several encounters were alledged to have happened it appears that he was at least a willing "victim" and quite possibly an eager participant. Being a juvenile doesn't automatically make him a saint! "
