Associate degrees were presented to 242 graduates during commencement ceremonies Friday at Maysville Community and Technical College.
Chief Judge Sara Walter Combs of the Kentucky Court of Appeals was the keynote speaker for the event.. Combs became the first woman and the first judge from the Eastern Kentucky counties of the 7th Appellate District to serve as chief judge of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. She assumed the role in June 2004 after her colleagues on the court voted unanimously to elect her to the position as chief judge, which provides administrative oversight to the Court of Appeals.
The Distinguished Service to Education Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award were presented by Dr. Jan Muto, interim president of the college.
"Each year in our annual commencement program, we pause to recognize contribution and excellence of two community members who embody achievement and service," Muto said. "These individuals have made a difference in many lives over the years. We bestow these awards as a way of telling recipients that they matter to MCTC."
Don Kiser, mayor of Paris, received the Distinguished Service to Education Award. Kiser was instrumental in luring MCTC to open the Paris Extension, Muto, who called Kiser "a visionary leader and advocate of higher education," said.
"As the elected mayor of Paris, he saw a need within his community for offering local post-secondary courses. While most people shrugged their shoulders and pointed toward Lexington, Mayor Kiser pointed to the empty basement in the municipal building in downtown Paris and asked Maysville Community and Technical College, 'if we build it, will you come?'” Muto told the audience.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Dr. Robert Michael Berry.
His post-secondary education began at MCTC where he graduated with honors in 1992. He then went on to the University of Kentucky, completing his first degree in agriculture. Berry also earned a master’s degree in animal science, and then graduated from the University of Kentucky Pharmacy School summa cum laude. Berry currently serves as part owner and manager of Fleming Drug Store in Flemingsburg.
"Dr. Berry is a shining example of how one person can make a difference for our community and the college," Muto said.
Muto also singled out Student Government President Brittany Day, one of 16 graduates of the inaugural class of Leadership KCTCS.
