Straub principal not coming back
Thursday, May 8, 2008 8:38 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Mason County Schools is undergoing several staffing changes, both with the retirement of eight-10 teachers, according to Superintendent Tim Moore, and two administrative changes at Straub Elementary School.

According to Moore, Straub Assistant Principal Jeanetta Stacy resigned a few weeks ago to pursue a leadership job.

In addition to the loss of Stacy, the contract of Straub Principal Stacy Kidwell was not renewed by the district, Moore said. The superintendent said he was unable to comment further since it involves a personnel issue.

Kidwell has been with Straub for only a year, filling the position vacated by former principal Sally Kalb. According to Mason County Assistant Superintendent Kelly Middleton, Kidwell was one of four candidates referred to the school's site-based council after candidates were screened by administrators at the central office. Kidwell was offered the position in June, 2007 and officially began her duties on July 1, 2007.

Some parents of Straub students said they are upset over the loss of Kidwell.

Parent Jodie Adams was at Straub early Tuesday morning, protesting the decision outside of the school until she was asked to leave by Middleton.

"He told me that I was holding up traffic," said Adams. "He was very nice and polite."

Adams said several parents have circulated a petition to keep Kidwell at Straub.

"I think if people really want to show their support, they should show up at the school board meeting Monday night at 6," said Adams.

The board meeting will be held in the board room at the central office, located in downtown Maysville.

Kidwell grew up with education, both her parents serving as teachers and coaches in the Lewis County School District.

She graduated from Lewis County High School, then received her bachelors degree in elementary education from Morehead State University. Kidwell received her masters degree in elementary education from Georgetown University, then secured her Rank I in administration at Eastern Kentucky University. She also secured her instructional supervisor and director of pupil personnel certification from EKU.

Kidwell served as assistant principal at an elementary school in Fayette County -- a district which has a total of 52 schools.

Kidwell said last June that she was looking for an opportunity to serve as principal and liked that Mason County is a smaller district and one of the top districts in the state. She also said she was encouraged by the hands-on approach of district administrators and what she described as the "total team concept."

" Ms. Stacy is a wonderful principal. To sad story, you couldn't have said it better. Stacy does not deserve any of the negative comments. People should be ashamed of themselves. I have known Stacy and her family my entire life and I am glad to say that she is a wonderful person and she does not deserve any of this. SHAME ON YOU!!!! for letter her go! "

" The people that really need out are all of those at the district office. Our test scores are good because of the hard work on the part of the teachers - NOT central office. When can it be there turn to go? "

" To "Straub Parent," I don't know when you visit the school but Ms. Kidwell is very interactive with the kids. You must not have been at Spring Fling last week because she knew the name of every child there and was interacting with the children from start to finish.
Finally someone does a great job at Straub and the staff is happy to come to work everyday and top administrators are still unhappy! It's very sad that they are so intimidated by someone doing so well in her first year that they have to run her off so soon. I hate to think it would be because she is a woman!!
But good luck to you Stacy...whatever school gets you will be very lucky!! Hopefully Straub will get to keep you after all! "

" In response to Bookworm. I have observed
in articles in The Ledger Independent
that Mason Co. scores higher on the required state tests than any of the
surrounding counties. The leadership
must be doing something right. I think the public is to quick to judge, when they do not know the circumstances. Let.s trust the leadership, the board and let them do their job. "

" All I can say is a big AMEN to "Straub Parent". I have a child at Straub and I have not been happy since the first week at school. Never see her, never any news letters, she doesn't return calls...... LET HER GO!!! "

" Is one year long enough? Was she addressed on the issues that were being held against her? Was a fair amount of time given to correct? Was the personal issues even school related? Was a second chance given? Was it so bad that a second chance wasn't given and a job should really be lost over it? Was this already decided before she even began the job? Hummmmmm....just wondering? And perhaps I'm sorry to even ask, but, it seems that, this is now a world, where "Doing Right is wrong and Doing Wrong is Right" "

" Has anyone asked their children what they think about Ms. Kidwell. I asked my daughter what she thought of her and she has told me numerous time that she loves Ms. Kidwell. She has only been with Straub for 1 year. How could she possible know all of the students names and do her job. Give her a chance!!! And from what I have been hearing from my older children is that they need to look at a few of the teachers at the high school and get rid of them because they are truly NOT TEACHING instead of worrying about a principal not knowing all of the kids names. "

" Who are we kidding here. Everything done with this school system is politics. I wished for once that we could look beyond this. There is more than just "yes" men. It seems to me that if this is not what you are then you are not welcome in the Mason County system. And as far as Ms. Kidwell interacting with the kids; I am in and out of the school everyday. There is not a day that goes by she is not talking to a child or checking up on a teacher. Maybe just Maybe if she is in her office, she just might be doing her job. Think about it. "

Ragin Royal wrote on May 9, 2008 3:13 PM:

" Many times you don't know the whole story. Talk to anybody on the staff and see how things were with the principal. She has done a wonderful job of putting kids first. I don't know what all the reasons are behind this action from the board, but from what I know about school systems it seems they don't always do what's best for KIDS and that's what Ms. Kidwell was all about. Best of luck to her in where ever life takes her next! "

" Stacy Kidwell is a top-notch professional and does not deserve the negative comments and treatment that she is receiving. Things are not always as they appear and if you knew the story behind the story I am sure you would be amazed. "

MC resident wrote on May 9, 2008 12:16 PM:

" From a business perspective, sometimes things are not always as they appear. Let's give the administration a break and assume that if the contract was not renewed, there is a good reason for it. Many times you don't know and won't know the whole story. "

Straub Parent wrote on May 9, 2008 11:49 AM:

" I presently have a child in the Straub Elementary School System. I have not been satisfied with her interaction with the students. I am regularly in the school and 9 out of 10 times she is in her office, I have rarely witnessed her to have any interaction with children. On the other hand the previous Principal Mrs. Kalb and the Assistant Principal Mrs. Stacy could walk up and down the hall and name almost all children they came into contact with.

I have neither been pleased or impressed with her actions as a principal. I have to commend the Mason County School System for having the courage to not renew her contract and realize what is best for the school system.

I would advise to the Lewis Co. Resident that would like to welcome her back to them, that I would be more than happy to send her back. My interaction with the Lewis County School system has proven to me that they allow individuals to stay on the employee list, while preforming less than an adequate job. "

Book worm wrote on May 9, 2008 10:09 AM:

" I want to know if the public realizes what happens to school district that have such leadership changes that this school has had in the past couple of years? Not good I will assure you. "

Former MC Resident wrote on May 9, 2008 8:11 AM:

" From what it seems Ms. Kidwell is the total package and it is truly a shame to see her go. This is one time the Mason County schools are making a big mistake. We love you Stacy!!! "

Parent wrote on May 8, 2008 11:26 PM:

" I hope that this a real issue and not just a difference in opinion or politics. Because Stacy Kidwell has done a really great job for Straub and is wonderful with the kids. This really breaks my heart! I wish that the superintendents office would reverse their decision, but if not, I hope that God will Bless you Ms. Kidwell above and beyond so much more than you could ever imagine. "

Lewis Co. resident wrote on May 8, 2008 10:28 PM:

" If Mason Co. doesn't want Stacy Kidwell in their school system, we'd be more than glad to have her in Lewis Co. Her parents have contributed alot to the educational and sports areaas in this county. Stacy, if you want come back home to Lewis Co., we are waiting for you with open arms!!!! "

Jane wrote on May 8, 2008 9:12 PM:

" The fact that they are not rehiring Kidwell is very disheartening and doesn't say much about the district. "
