Parents show support for Kidwell at school board meeting

Parents of students at Straub Elementary School attended Monday night's meeting of the Mason County School Board to express their support of outgoing principal, Stacy Kidwell and to question administrators about why she was relieved of her duties.

Several parents expressed their concerns that Kidwell's contract was not renewed for the upcoming school year, making reference to the high morale at the school among parents, staff and students.

When news of Kidwell's termination became public on May 8, Superintendent Tim Moore said he was unable to comment further on the decision since it involves a personnel issue.

Jodi Adams was the first to address board members, reminding them she was the parent who attempted to circulate a petition on school property last week in support of Kidwell. Adams said she understood the decision not to renew Kidwell's contract by school administrators probably wasn't going to change, but she wanted a chance to speak on Kidwell's behalf.

"It's hard for me to believe ... that this is happening," Adams said, stating as a parent she has seen a positive influence at the school since Kidwell became principal in August, 2007.

"I would have liked to have seen proof where she went wrong," said Adams, who then proceeded to ask if Kidwell was given any type of progress reports or growth charts by administrators to gauge her success or failures throughout the year.

"Who's helping her?" asked Adams. "I don't feel like she was supported through the administration."

Adams said she was only able to obtain the signatures of 71 parents on her petition, but felt if she, as well as other parents, had had earlier notification of Kidwell's termination, she could have collected more signatures of those parents who protested the decision.

Melissa Dixon also spoke up in defense of Kidwell, saying morale at the school was great.

Before other parents could speak to the board, Chairman Terry Cunningham asked if the parents had a collective spokesperson or if they all wished to speak, explaining he wanted to determine how many people were going to speak. He was told they all wanted to speak as individuals.

Cunningham then asked Adams if she had contacted Superintendent Tim Moore to express her concerns.

Adams said she couldn't get in touch with Moore, acknowledging he was busy, but said she had tried "several times" without success.

Cunningham assured Adams if she were to contact Moore again, "he would be accessible."

Parrish Manning and Lori Johnson also spoke on Kidwell's behalf, with Manning going so far as to say that past experiences with school administrators in the district have left her feeling unwelcome and afraid to visit the schools her children attend.

"The teachers are happy, the parents are happy, the children are thriving," said Johnson. "What do you expect ... what do you want from her?"

Chris Dunaway was the last parent to address the board, saying he thought school administrators and school board members should support the parents on this issue.

"It would be nice to have the board's support," said Dunaway.

After hearing the concerns of all parents who wished to speak, the board went on to conduct other business before them.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Moore was asked if the decision to terminate Kidwell's contract would be reconsidered after listening to the concerns of those parents who attended.

"I haven't changed my decision," Moore said, again citing the issue as being a personnel issue, which leaves him unable to comment on why Kidwell's contract was not renewed.

However, Moore did say as an administrator, it's important to value what parents have to say and to listen to them with respect, but ultimately, it is his decision to make the best decision upon the information provided.

Moore said he, as superintendent is limited to what he can say since the issue involves a personnel matter, but Kidwell can divulge the reasons given to her by his office if she wants to.

"I appreciate their concern and passion for what they believe. I haven't changed my decision," Moore said.

In other business, the board:

-- Approved attendance at an FCCLA national meeting in Orlando, Fla.

-- Approved the MCHS Boys Basketball team's attendance at the Sunshine Classic Holiday Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. in December, 2008.

-- Approved a $275,357.00 contract with Maher Electric for electrical upgrades at Straub Elementary, Mason County Middle School and the high school for improved technology access.

-- Went into executive session to discuss candidates for the Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service awards, which will be presented at graduation on Friday, May 30.

-- Approved a state mandated raise of 1 percent for certified and classified salary schedules for the 2008/2009 school year.

" I have known Stacy since 1st grade and can tell you that her work ethic is excellent. She has always put her all into everything she has done. There are a few comments here that says she knows the reason why she is being dismissed, she will tell in good time. I think the superintendent has another agenda and his "personnel" or "personal" reasons are just that. For the comment that Superintendents don't just do this for no reason, sure, he has "personnel" or "personal" reasons for this. Stacy has been around the educational field all of her life. Her parents are teachers and her brother is a teacher. This is in her blood. She has done an excellent job and she is getting a bad deal. Remember to vote for your school board representatives next election. Things could change!!!!! "

" THERE IS A REASON BEHIND THIS I`M SURE SO MS. KIDWELL HAS TO KNOW A LITTLE OF WHY HER CONTRACT WAS NOT RENEWED . "

A reader wrote on May 14, 2008 5:25 PM:

" There's always more to a story than we know. I'm sure the superintendent has a valid reason for not renewing Mrs. Kidwell's contract. Superintendents don't do that just for the heck of it. I'm sure Mrs. Kidwell knows the reason. "

" I thought Mason Coutny schools practiced "Customer Service"! Sounds like to me they are not practicing what they preach! Clearly the customers of Mason County want Kidwell as their principal and the board will not hear it! "

" In reading all these posts, it appears that nobody actually knows for sure what is going on, why, and all else involved with this situation. Opinions, like mine, are easy to voice and post, but why do not all these folks just wait and eventually the truth will come out of all of this confusion. It just might be quite surprising who is right, who is wrong, who is getting all straight here. "

" A 1% raise,m you got to be kidding. All the hard work these people put in day after day and you want to offer them 1%. That comes out to a whole extra $1.60 a month for a 40 hour working week. not even a gallon of gas... At least fill thier tanks so they can get to work. You know the some of the big shots downtown drive on our taxpayers gas money. "

Change wrote on May 13, 2008 11:07 PM:

" It is time for a change...the 1% raise is a slap in the face from the legislators of KY towards education employees. If we want this changed, we must elect people that are friends of education...Senator Borders has certainly been one of the enemies of education with his lack of concern for teachers and classified people as well as his support of this terrible budget enacted by the state. "

Smokin Joe, why do you say she wasn't getting it done? What is the evidence other than a board that didn't want her in the first place getting rid of her as soon as possible? "

" I would first like to say that I was given the opportunity to work with Mrs. Kidwell.....And everyday she had a smile on her face that she wsa making a difference in all of her student's lives. This is very important!!!! I'm sure she understood her role as principal and am SURE that she did her best on every aspect of her job. A school district runs successfully with all staff on board. While working at Straub the only "staff" from downtown that I saw at the school was Mr. Middleton. I feel that if there were more people like Mr. Middleton and Miss Kidwell EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL!!!!!! THINK ABOUT IT WE NEED A CHANGE! "

mistersinister wrote on May 13, 2008 4:19 PM:

" ok so here we go. it's ok for the dismissal of a school administrator and just pass by parent's and children's feelings. a personal issue? almost sounds like a personal vendetta or grudge. oh and look, there is basketball in the news too. mason county should concentrate more on academics than sports. the team won, great. i went to a high school with several state championships in both basketball and football. however we didnt shut down school for it. support the team yes, but dont forget about what is most important in school, education! "

smokinjoe wrote on May 13, 2008 3:20 PM:

" I'm on the outside looking in, but am very impressed with the Mason County Schools and what they are accomplishing. I also know the Supt. and Asst. Supt. and would say that Mason County is lucky to have great administrators! Let them do their job! I'd say the reason the principal was let go is because she wasn't getting it done. "

another parent wrote on May 13, 2008 2:06 PM:

" Keep fighting Ms. Kidwell!! Don't let this drop. My guess is she did not let this group control her every move so they want to get rid of her. Think it is time for some new leadership at Mason County schools? Our taxes pay these salaries, the board included, we should be informed of the reason why she has been asked to leave. Any parent should be allowed to stand in front of that school and get as many signatures as they want. This is still America isn't it? The board knows this is wrong, that is why they went about this the way they did. They did this as a sneak attack so they could have this meeting on Monday night hoping that no one would be there. If this was all on the up and up they would have called the paper and had this story published right away and allowed parents the time to come forward and speak up for her. Can't say that I blame her if she wants to move on away from there and if she does Good Luck to you, I know you will do great wherever you go. It is Mason County's loss. "

" I, like Dae, have known Stacy since we were children. She has always been taught by her parents, who were also dedicated educators in the Lewis Co. school system, to put her all into everything she has ever done. Stacy is an exceptional person, who deserves more than one year to get things accomplished. From what the parents have said, she made a strong and positive influence in the year that she was there, give her a chance to continue to improve upon what she has already accomplished. If not, Stacy come home to Lewis Co., we could sure use you here!!!!! "

The Not-so In Crowd wrote on May 13, 2008 12:25 PM:

" Its all because they didn't want Mrs. Kidwell from the beginning and the site based council wanted her...also the Assistant Principal leaving played a big part into Mrs Kidwell's contract not being renewed...I agree that the board needs to look above the principals if there is such a problem...this makes the 3rd principal my daughter will have in 3 years of school.... "

trucker wrote on May 13, 2008 12:15 PM:

" I think everyone should take a step back and ask Ms Kidwell why she thinks it is not being re-newed is it because she might be the new principla at fleming county and she is not telling because that is what I have heard so maybe we should be asking more questions of her and not the school board "

Hope wrote on May 13, 2008 11:46 AM:

" I just hope that everyone stops bothering Ms. Kidwell. She will do just fine at her next job. Best of luck with your next principal position. "

Agree with Lewis wrote on May 13, 2008 11:44 AM:

" I would definitely agree with the parent from Lewis. My children attended Central and they have never had such quality care and concerns from any principal. My children and I abosutely love her! She is a wonderful administrator and is very caring towards the children and staff. That is exactly where the Board should look first. My children are at Mason now and they still talk about her. She was a very positive influence in my children's education. "

" I wonder who hires the position for super intendent? Maybe it's time that since Mason County is in such a need for a change - then we should look for a new super intendent (for personal reasons!) "

dae wrote on May 13, 2008 9:09 AM:

" Taking on the responsibility of being a prinicpal is a harder job than people think...especially if it is your first year...eventhough Stacy had been an assistant, running the show is a different story...I am not from Mason County and do not really know the whole story but being in education for a few years I understand it takes teamwork and dedication from all...being in the hallways and interacting with the kids is only part of the job, she still has all the plans and paperwork that everyday people do not see...i have known Stacy since High School and would have to say to this day she is one of my best friends and could only imagine she would have given this job her all..she puts her heart into everything that she does...my advice to Stacy is to keep your head up and go to a school district that will appreciate the hard work that you do...Good things will come of this...I'll keep you in my prayers...i love ya....
