KHSAA making changes to football alignment
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 9:24 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control held its regular meeting in Lexington on Tuesday and approved the Football Committee's recommendation to maintain the previously approved alignment for 2007 and 2008 along with some minor modifications on a case by case basis with regard to travel time and distance, along with changes in enrollment figures.

"The board chose to move forward by tweaking the current alignment and make minor adjustments rather than starting over and aligning top to bottom or using other variables," KHSAA Assistant Commissioner Julian Tackett said. "With only one year into a new playoff system, there really wasn't enough data to make major revisions."

The football committee recommended one change involving a local school.

Fleming County High School appears to be headed to District 3-7, which would put the Panthers in the same district as Mason County, Lewis County, East Carter, Russell and West Carter.

The proposed realignment has been sent to member schools for feedback, meaning that Fleming County will be able to respond to the change, either positively or negatively.

The Panthers would be moving from District 3-6, which includes Breathitt County, Estill County, Powell County and another school being asked to change districts, Magoffin County. Cawood High School was also a District 3-6 member last season, but has now merged with Evarts and Cumberland into the new Harlan County High School, which will be placed in Class 5A.

Fleming County head football coach Gene Peterson said he did not attend the meeting, stating that he was "shocked at the move," and was caught off guard by the proposal.

The veteran coach is not yet certain if the school administration will appeal the move or accept the change.

"I was unaware that this was going to happen, and I haven't talked yet with the school superintendent about the change," Peterson said.

He declined further comment until he could speak with Fleming County Schools Superintendent Kelley Crain about the proposed move.

The Panthers moved to District 3-6 last year when the KHSAA overhauled the football alignment and split the state into six divisions from the previous four-class system.

" This a smart move as it will decrease traveling as fuel keeps going up "

" Suck it up Fleming. You requested being moved in with Breathitt and the other teams cause its a weaker district and keeps you away from Russell and Mason Co. Furthermore Flemings superintendent should have known about the move because she serves on the same KHSAA board of control that voted for this. "
