Bracken County promotes Patrick Kelsch to lead Lady Bears in girls basketball
Friday, May 9, 2008 8:40 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Patrick Kelsch, who served as the interim girls basketball coach at Bracken County High School for the last several weeks of the 2007-08 season, was named the new head coach Friday.

The 30-year-old Augusta native has spent the last six years as an assistant coach at the Brooksville school and the team was 6-2 (last year after he took over for Molly Schultz, who led the Lady Bears program for three years. Bracken County finished with a 13-13 record after dropping a hard-fought, 46-44 decision to Campbell County in the 10th Region tournament at Alexandria.

Kelsch is thrilled about his new position and thanked his "very beautiful and supportive wife", Erin, and his two children, Raynah and Korbin, for always being in his corner.

"I'm extremely excited about the opportunity," Kelsch said. "This has been a lifelong dream of mine while growing up in a basketball family. My brother, Robin (the Augusta boys head coach), has been my main coaching influence. I just hope to continue the winning tradition in girls basketball at Bracken County and build on it in the future."

Looking ahead to the 2008-09 season, Kelsch sees reason for optimism.

"We lost two seniors (Dana Figgins and Tara Kauinui) but we will return three excellent senior leaders, with Chelsea Ahrens, Alex Rogers and Haley Ware coming back," said Kelsch. "The girls who won regional titles as eighth graders and freshmen are now juniors, so we can no longer use inexperience as an excuse."

Kelsch also said he has "high expectations" for next year's squad and is enthusiastic about the Lady Bears' prospects.

"We believe we can contend for the 10th Region All "A" Classic title and believe we have a legitimate chance in the regional tournament," said Kelsch. "We are also strengthening next year's schedule in an effort to improve the team and prepare them for the postseason."
