Lewis County bombards Deming with eight home runs in 24-5 win

MOUNT OLIVET -- The Lewis County Lions went on the road to Robertson County on Tuesday afternoon and put on their own version of home run derby, clubbing eight long balls on their way to a 24-5 win over host Deming.

The game came to its merciful conclusion after the Lions sent 17 hitters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits.

Zach Shaw led off the fifth with a line drive that cleared the left field fence, but it was just the first of six home runs in the inning for the visitors from Vanceburg. Others who got into the home run act in the fifth inning were Jake Bolander (his second of the game), Coty Dermon, Kyle Frerichs, Jared Pruitt and Frankie Witten.

Witten led the offensive onslaught with a 5-for-5 performance, which included four runs scored, a double and a homer. He also drove in the first run of the game, driving in Shaw with his double to deep center field in the first.

"Frankie came in to today hitting .375, we can't ask for more than he did today, and he also anchors our defense in the infield," said Lewis County coach Josh Hughes. "Our leadoff hitter, Jeremy Lykins (who was 2-for-2 with a home run), leads the team at .545, and he's had maybe one game all season when he didn't get at least one hit."

Lewis County began the game with a nine-run first, which included six hits and three Deming errors. The Lions sent 15 hitters to the plate and the damage could even been worse for the home team, with the visitors leaving the bases full.

Deming starting pitcher Nathan Skaggs struggled with his control and the freshman was pulled after hitting Ryan Calvert with a pitch, making him the third such victim of the inning. Skaggs also surrendered a base on balls and gave up a long home run to Bolander, a shot that cleared the shelter house beyond the left field fence.

Darius Workman came on in relief of Skaggs, and the junior was touched up for a three-run line-drive home run from Lykins before allowing a pair of singles and a runner to reach on an error. He ended the inning with a strikeout and a fly out to leave the bases loaded.

The Lewis County coach was pleased with his club's errorless defense, as well as the explosive offensive attack.

"We swung at good pitches and no matter who we play, or where we play, we have to be ready. The eight home runs has got to be a school record and the 24 runs is the most I can remember scoring since I've been around Lewis County," said Hughes. "Today was also the second error-free game we've had recently. We've only made three or four in the past week or so, and we've been working hard on our defense. We're going to be all right if we can continue to play that well defensively."

The Devils, who are fielding a shorthanded squad following the loss of five players who quit the team recently, sliced an 11-0 deficit to 11-5 with two runs in the third and three in the fourth, before the fateful fifth inning.

A line-drive, two-run home run over the left field fence from Workman got Deming on the board in the third inning, and the Devils added three more in the fourth on only one hit. After four walks, Garrett Young lined a shot into the gap in right-center field to plate a pair.

The Lions (14-10) host Elliott County today, while the 8-14 Devils go on the road to face Villa Madonna.

" It's time to let this one go--
Kids quit for what ever reason, I'm sure if the kid doesn't want be there than the coach does't want him/her to waste his/her time. Teams go on to play. Play with what you have. Show pride in you school. Kids who love the sport will continue to play there or elsewhere. When you look back on it either you will be glad you quit or glad you played.Childhood is short enjoy it.

" Right field fence is about 270 at best, maybe as short as 260. Centerfield is quite a shot probably 350. Left is 310 "

" In response to quiting losers,
Deming sports has never been about winning, it has been about giving these kids a chance to play.Deming fans support their kids win or lose. Every year these coaches give up countless hours in practice, games and bus trips. To ask the kids to give 100% effort is that too much? "

" Wow, this is high school baseball isn't it? What happened to finishing what you started, sportsmanship and team play training. Kids play sports to learn valuable lessons they can use later in life, not for trophies and stats. What's wrong with parents, administrators and coaches who lose sight of that fact with a win at all cost mentality. What a shameful example these adults collectively are providing for these young men. We wonder, as a society why our children stray, make mistakes and choose the wrong path...Maybe they do so only because they are following our examples we set for them as adults. Re-evaluate yourselves if you find that you have anything to do with young persons life and remember that they are watching, following and inheriting what you teach them. Wake up people and remember that you are the adults here. "

" In response...
The KHSAA requirement does say level two coaches need to be trained on the physical and emotional development of students of the age who he/she will be working with, However...
it says "provided by the school district" So my question is, Has Deming provided training for all coaches both middle and high school? Maybe the Deming athletic program as a whole should be evaluated on the lack of following proper procedures in all of its sports both middle and highschool....And to the kids still playing baseball best of luck with the rest of the season, and remember quitters never prosper.
"

" My kid had every reason to quit the basketball team, and even wanted to but wasn't allowed. So, the next year it was his decision not to play. Win or lose, play or sat the bench, like the coach or not he has to stick out. "

" From what I understand is that a freshman started,a junior came pitched 2 innings to be eligible to pitch the next day, the eight grader came in. Then another junior to close out. "

" Kudos to the Deming kids who also quit the team. Dont like to see the kids quit but it was the best for the situation. Too many chiefs and not enough indians on the team. "

" shouldnt of pitched the eight grader. Lewis took advantage of the short fence and hit the longball. "

Dennis wrote on May 7, 2008 10:46 PM:

" that don't matter we still hit the homeruns and we won the ballgame "

Quitters Club Parent wrote on May 7, 2008 8:04 PM:

" Why continue to reference the recent team members quitting? These 13 errors per game, cry baby, a baseball player would make that throw, 8th grader had to bail you out Sr pitcher, do not back your pitcher up, show me something different, quitters club as they have been referred to only would provide negative outcomes. I think the players were told it made no difference if they quit or not. Discipline is a part of the coaching process and that would be the reason KHSAA has a bylaw stating Level 2 coaches must be trained on the physical and emotional development of students of the age whom he/she will be working with, the
school's discipline policies, procedures for dealing with discipline problems, and safety training. If the students/players are constantly showing lack of sportsmanship or character the school needs to be notified so appropriate discipline can be administered. Coaches do not need to humiliate the players in the presence of fans, teammates, parents and other teams. Positive motivation-point out their successes, encourage to improve and teach needed skills. Realize a coach is the motivator of the team and he/she is the adult..reason for KHSAA requirement shall be 21 years of age. BTW the writer does mention the pitcher is a "freshman". The freshman has not pitched very many games..a few last year but he continues to
improve. "Quitters Club" parent wishes the remaining Deming players the Best of Luck with the remainder of the season. "

deming mom wrote on May 7, 2008 8:31 AM:

" He failed to mention that Most of the homeruns in the "homerun derby" came off an eight grade pitcher. Kudos the Deming kids who are sticking out the rest of the season. "
