Reilly's one-hitter leads Brossart past Lady Royals, 6-0

Senior righthander Katie Reilly baffled the Lady Royals' hitters with a variety of pitches during her superlative outing.
Heading into the seventh inning Reilly had allowed only one baserunner, a walk to Lacey Cline in the fourth inning. Her no-hitter was broken up on an infield single by eighth grader Leigh Newdigate on a slow bouncer that was chopped off the plate. Brossart third baseman Krista Kennedy's throw to first was a split second late, but Reilly finished strong, inducing a ground ball forceout and fanning the final two Mason County hitters, giving her eight strikeouts in the game.
Reilly's performance was even more remarkable, considering she tossed the shutout while nursing a sprained left ankle.
"I'm happy with the way I pitched, but I'm not as strong as I normally am, with the injury," said Reilly. "I use five different pitches, including a slider and a change-up, and I usually try to mix it up."
Reilly also spoke of her status as the team leader since she is the lone senior on a young Brossart squad.
"It's tough at times being a leader, and it gets kind of lonely, but all of the underclassmen are a joy to be around," she said.
Lady Royals pitcher Karissa Greenhill also pitched well, blanking the Lady 'Stangs on two hits until the sixth inning. That fateful frame began with a base on balls, a sacrifice bunt that the eighth grade pitcher threw wildly to first for an error, and a hit batsman, loading the bases with none out.
The first run of the game scored on a sacrifice fly from Kennedy, before Greenhill struck out Alicia Miller for the second out. Sophomore Paige Baynum followed with a line drive single to center to plate a pair of runs, and sophomore Jenna Bezold brought in the final run of the inning on a base hit to center field.
Brossart (11-10) added two runs in the seventh inning on a Lindsay Studer two-base hit and singles from Hannah Uthe and Lindsay Griffith.
Mason County coach Meredith Fraysure was impressed with Reilly's performance.
"She pitched a great game and she's the first pitcher we've faced all year that mixed her pitches that well, no matter what the count was," Fraysure said. "Their defense was airtight and we had that one bad inning. We weren't as aggressive as we have been at the plate recently and our offense has to help out Karissa, who was as perfect as we can expect her to be."
The Lady Royals, who dropped to 8-9, have an opportunity to get back on track this afternoon when they travel to Fleming County.
