Greyhounds romp past Augusta, 19-4

AUGUSTA -- Augusta retired the side in order in the top of the first and scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the rest of the game would be all Manchester as the Greyhounds posted a 19-3 win Wednesday in Augusta.

The decisive half-inning proved to be the top of the third, when the first nine batters Manchester sent to the plate all managed to score. Control problems would be a continuing theme for Augusta as the four pitchers they sent to the mound combined for 13 walks and two hit batsmen. Never was this more costly than in the third inning when the Greyhounds' nine runs came on just three hits, due to five walks, three errors and a hit batsman.

However, Manchester would make those hits count as Cory Tolle doubled twice to bring home three runs and Brad Flora would add another two run double off the fence in right center. With the nine-run third inning coming on the heels of a four-run second in which Jordan Perry had a two-run single and R.D. Beasley an RBI base hit, the game was out of hand at 13-1 by the time Augusta retired the Greyhounds.

The Panthers, who used back-to-back singles by Ryan Kelsch and JoJo Gray to post an early run, added two more in the bottom of the third on three consecutive Manchester errors, but would never cut the deficit to single digits. Manchester added two more in the fourth on RBI singles by Devin Varney and Lance Dickerson, then tacked on another four in the final inning with Dickerson adding a two-run single.

Kelsch rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when he stole third and came home when the throw sailed into left field.

Beasley started and took the win for the Greyhounds, working two innings, striking out three and allowing one unearned run. With a commanding lead, Tyler Penny and Darrin Shelton finished out the game with Penny working the third and fourth, striking out four, and Shelton working the fifth, striking out three.

The win brings Manchester to the .500 mark at 8-8 while Augusta stays winless at 0-7. The Greyhounds are back in action today at Fayetteville while the Panthers travel to Mason County Monday.
