Royals drop 8-2 decision to Bourbon County

Though Mason County was coming off a 15-run performance a day before, the Royals' bats fell silent Tuesday as Bourbon County cruised to an 8-2 victory.

The hot-hitting Colonels, winners of nine of their last 11 games, got home runs by Mack Manning and Jeremy Sallee, who combined to go 3-for-7 and drive in five of the team's eight runs. On the other hand, the Royals struggled to find any momentum at the plate as they were held to four hits, but more importantly, saw four innings end in double plays.

Bourbon County didn't waste any time getting started as Keenan Freitag singled and Manning doubled in the top of the first. Sallee followed with an single, scoring Freitag, but the Royals escaped further damage when left fielder Drew Lykins cut down Manning at the plate to end the inning. However, the Colonels were back at it again in the third when Eli Covington bounced to third and two runs scored on the overthrow of first base. A batter later, Sallee laced a double into left field beyond the reach of a diving Lykins, bringing the score to 4-0.

The four runs turned out to be more than enough for Bourbon County starting pitcher Andy Dutton, who went the distance, allowing two unearned runs and taking the win. Though his defense put pressure on him by committing five errors, they also bailed him out with inning-ending double plays in each of the first three innings.

The Royals biggest offensive threat came from Richie Cox, who didn't have a hit but walked twice and reached on an error. Through aggressive baserunning and taking advantage of Colonels errors, Cox got himself in position for Eric Meadows to drive him home on a ground out in the fourth inning and a double in the sixth, accounting for both Royals runs.

With the second run pulling Mason County within striking distance at 4-2, Bourbon immediately answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to an RBI double by Freitag followed by a two-run blast by Manning. Holding onto a more comfortable lead at 7-2 in the seventh, the Colonels got an insurance run when Sallee hit nearly an identical shot over the left field fence.

In Mason's final chance, Lykins reached on an error to lead off the inning, but was immediately erased by the Colonels' fourth and final double play.

The win improves Bourbon County's mark to 13-6 on the year while Mason County falls to 7-14. The Royals return to action Thursday at Campbell County.
