Lady Lions cruise past Fleming County, 10-3 Tuesday, April 29, 2008 9:52 PM EDT
The host Lady Panthers dropped their ninth in a row and saw their season mark fall to 2-13. Lewis County (7-6) got on the board in the opening frame without benefit of hit, due to the control problems experienced by freshman pitcher Victoria Sergent. Jessi Marth led the game off with a walk, Whitley Mason was hit by a pitch, Trayla Liles drew a base on balls and Molly Caskey was hit by a pitch to begin the game. Marth scored the first run on a wild pitch, but Mason was cut down at the plate when she attempted to duplicate the feat. Following the second out of the inning, Tiffany Bradford singled up the middle to plate Liles for the second run. The Lady Lions could have done even more damage in the second inning but left the bases full without scoring a run. Lewis County stranded 13 baserunners in the contest, an area of concern for coach Jimmy Lykins. "We left a lot of runners on, especially early in the game, and we've been struggling at the plate recently," said Lykins. "But we came through late in the game and we changed the lineup today in an effort to straighten things out. The last few games we've been really disappointed with the way we played and the girls feel like they're better than that." After the Lady Panthers scored a run in the third inning, the Lady Lions distanced themselves with a three-run fourth. Fleming County's run came in on a double from Kaylyn Emmons over the leftfielder's head that brought in Amber Ruark, who led off the inning with a base hit to left. Ruark, a sophomore shortstop hitting in the nine spot, was 3-for-3, leading the Lady Panthers' 12-hit attack. Lewis County pushed its lead to 5-1 with the three-run fourth, before putting the game away with four more runs in the sixth inning. The key hit in the fourth inning was a two-out single to center field that drove in a pair of runs from Amber Clark. The junior leftfielder also made the defensive play of the game, making a diving catch of a low liner in left-center field in the second inning to rob Kayla Gooding of a hit.
