Merle Kidwell named boys coach at Russell

Former Lewis County boys' basketball coach Gary Kidwell is the new boys' head coach at Russell.

Kidwell has coached the Russell girls' basketball team for the past five years, compiling a record of 115-42 and twice making it to the final of the 16th Region Tournament.

He replaces Steve Dodd, who resigned.

Kidwell, 41, grew up in Vanceburg and played basketball for his father, Gary Kidwell, at Lewis County High School. After high school, he played one year at Shawnee State, and later coached Shawnee State. He was an assistant coach at Morehead State under head coach Dick Fick for two years.

He attended Georgetown College for a semester, and was the roommate of current Mason County head basketball coach Chris O'Hearn.

Kidwell will be taking over a team that was 3-26 this past season.

"Russell has a proud basketball tradition and won the region multiple times," Kidwell said.

Kidwell said he hopes to take advantage of the many good athletes at Russell and install a quicker-paced style of play.

Kidwell lives in Flatwoods. He has two children, Carson, 7, and Kate, 6.
