RIPLEY, Ohio -- St. Patrick combined solid defense and timely hitting to come away with a 5-3 victory Monday at Ripley in high school softball.
Lady Jays pitchers Blake Germann and LaNorah D'Andrea combined to strike out 10 and hold St. Patrick to just five hits, but those hits came at the right times for the Lady Saints, who combined all of them between a two-run third inning and a three-run fifth. Meanwhile, Ripley tallied seven hits but stranded runners at second and third in the first and seventh innings and a runner at third in the fourth.
The victory comes following a weeklong layoff after the Lady Saints' loss to Bishop Brossart in the All "A" Classic, something that concerned coach Jeff Crawford, but may have given the players a chance to clear their heads and get a fresh start.
"We haven't played since the All 'A' because of the school play, so I was kind of worried," said Crawford. "But maybe it turned out to be a good thing. I thought we could play that well but I just hadn't seen it yet. I'm just glad to see them win a close game against a good team and glad to be back on the winning track."
After being held hitless by Germann over the first two innings, St. Patrick struck in the third when Katie Hamm and Leslie Pfeffer singled, then both came home when Brooke Mosler hit a ground ball to third and the throw sailed wide of the first base bag. A pair of singles started things off for St. Patrick again in the fifth, this time by Pfeffer and Wallis Stanfield. Katie Crawford, who also went the distance in the circle and took the victory, helped her own cause with a two-run single up the middle and later scored on an error.
Ripley manufactured a run in the third when Germann was hit by a pitch, advanced on a fielders choice, stole third and came home on an Alex Ormes ground out. The Lady Jays would get two more in the bottom of the sixth when Germann and Ormes each added RBI singles.
In their last at bat, Ripley mounted a two-out rally when Jackie Siegel and Stacy Workman singled and made their way to second and third. Katlyn Adams, who already had two hits in the game, came to the plate as the winning run, but hit a hard line drive which Mosler snagged to end the game.
Mosler's catch was the last of several tough plays in the field made by St. Patrick, which finished with only one error, previously an area of weakness for the young team.
"There were some nice defensive plays, and I like to see that," said Crawford. "We don't have a power pitcher so we're going to have to play good defense."
Ripley (4-9) is back in action today at West Union while St. Patrick hosts Nicholas County on Wednesday.
