FLEMINGSBURG -- The Fleming County fast-pitch softball team returned to what has become an unfamiliar place this season on Thursday, when the Lady Panthers played only their second home game of the season.
Visiting Rowan County High School scored early and often and went on to a 21-0 triumph at Lady Panther Field. The game was halted after five innings because of the mercy rule and was the fourth win in a row for Rowan County (12-4).
Youthful Fleming County (2-10) dropped its fifth consecutive game.
Fleming County managed just a pair of singles off senior right-hander Danielle Jenning, who was in control the entire game. She did not issue a walk and struck out nine during her five-inning stint. The only Lady Panthers baserunners were junior catcher Molly Crain, who singled to right field in the first inning, and sophomore Kaitlin Fearin, who rapped a base hit up the middle in the third.
Jenning got all the run support she needed in the opening inning, when the Lady Vikings sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring five runs on a pair of hits. Fleming County starting pitcher Victoria Sergent allowed three walks and was victimized by three errors.
After getting leadoff batter Kaitlin Muncy to pop out to first baseman Sam Jolly, Amelia O'Hair reached on an error, Amber Riddle singled sharply to left field, and Tanya Hall reached on an infield hit before Keisha McClain and Stefanie Howard both reached on walks. Two more Fleming County errors kept the inning going, with the final run coming in on a base on balls to Muncy.
Rowan County added four more in the second, four in the third, a single run in the fourth, and seven in the fifth.
Sergent left in the second inning in favor of sophomore Amber Ruark, and after hitting the first batter she faced, stopped the bleeding momentarily by retiring Muncy on a soft liner to second baseman Chelsea Kaenzig, who turned the catch into an unassisted double play.
Rowan County didn't let up, coming up with four runs on four hits in the third. O'Hair, Riddle and Hall hit consecutive singles during the rally. Rachael Burrows also joined the hit parade, singling in a run.
Riddle added an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning, part of her 4-for-4 day at the plate, which included a double and two singles. She also scored four times and drove in a pair. Hall also enjoyed a big offensive afternoon, with a double, two singles and scoring four runs.
The Lady Panthers are scheduled to go back on the road this afternoon, when they travel to Irvine to take on Estill County.
