Clooney museum acquires Leatherheads football uniform
Saturday, May 24, 2008 12:01 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
AUGUSTA -- Keepers of the Rosemary Clooney House Museum would have been content with just the namesake leather helmet worn by George Clooney in his recent movie "Leatherheads." What they got was even more surprising and precious.

"We were at the premiere of "Leatherheads" in March and were told the entire football costume, from the cleats and socks to the helmet we had originally asked for, was ours to have for the museum," said Steve Henry, curator and former Kentucky lieutenant governor.

Actor George Clooney is the nephew of famed actress and entertainer Rosemary Clooney who once lived in the house on Riverside Drive in Augusta which is now home to a growing museum filled with her memorabilia, many items from her movie "White Christmas," and that of Clooney family members. His parents, Nick and Nina Clooney and other family members still live peacefully in the Ohio River city.

Henry and his wife, former Miss America Heather French Henry bought and renovated the house after Rosemary Clooney died.

The uniform was on display as part of the red carpet movie premiere attended by Clooney and co-star Renee Zellweger on March 24 at Washington Opera House in Maysville.

A set of autographed scrubs worn by George in the television series E.R. are already on display in the museum, Henry said.

"This will be a nice addition. In the future we are hoping to accumulate at least one costume from each of his new movies," Henry said.

An unveiling of the new display and dedication ceremony is scheduled to coincide with Art in the Garden and the Clooney family reunion, June 7, Henry said.

"It will be at 10 a.m. I don't believe George will be there but many other family members are often on hand when we have a dedication lie this," he said.

Just entering its fourth year of operation, the Rosemary Clooney House Museum has been a popular tourist attraction for Augusta, Henry said.

"We are looking at passing the 50,000 visitor, since we opened, mark soon," he said.
