Relay for Life events put the ‘unity’ in ‘community’
Saturday, May 31, 2008 1:01 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
It takes a community to fight cancer. In Mason County and Bracken County, Relay for Life teams are continuing to hold fund-raising events in anticipation of American Cancer Society Relay For Life 2008 finale events this summer.

Ingenuity is often used to bring in every penny teams use to go for bragging rights each year. Donations of time, products and space help each team get closer to individual and county goals. Flower sales, dinners, yard sales and a variety of activities have spurred on participating teams.

The Relay For Life of Mason County event is scheduled for June 13, at the Mason County Recreation Park at Washington.

A Country Fair: Food, Fun and Fighting Cancer is the theme for participants to follow.

Festivities begin at 7 p.m., with a parade of teams at 8 p.m. Karaoke, live entertainment and activities are planned for throughout the night as participants circle the walking lane in memory of those lost to cancer and those who have survived the battle. Luminaria are still available for $5 donations, organizers said.

Teams will set up individual booths in the park for information, treats and entertainment.

Fund-raising activities also continue in Bracken County.

Today a car wash is being held 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the parking lot of Brooksville Christian Church. A clean car and a warm heart are the anticipated results, organizers said.

On Sunday, an ice cream social, complete with gospel music is also planned at the church, 12:30 - 3 p.m. Hot-dogs and other picnic favorites will be available for donors.

A dinner to honor cancer survivors is planned for the Chatham Christian Church, 1 p.m., June 5.

Bracken County Relay for Life finale event for 2008 is July 11, at Bracken County High School football field; in addition to memorial walks, entertainment and luminaria events, during the event a Shoot for the Stars talent show will be held at 8 p.m.

" I'd like to say that it's wonderful to have all of the Relay Volunteers on the committee in Bracken County. I met Tara Wilson, Renee Mcclanahan and Lynn Darnell and they're doing a wonderful job! I'm so happy to have them so young and motivated to be doing this for us. Keep up the good work girls and hang in there....We're looking forward to July 11th! "
