GERMANTOWN -- A dirt bike accident at the Germantown Fairgrounds off Kentucky 10 Friday, resulted in minor injuries for the driver of the motorbike, officials said.

A 13-year-old Dover boy was riding his dirt bike on the fairground access road, according to Mason County Deputy Terry Fryman.

Fryman said the boy was riding along the road in the fairgrounds when he came over a hill and noticed a truck approaching. According to Fryman, the boy cut the wheel of his dirt bike to the side in an attempt to avoid hitting the truck and slid underneath the truck and off the bike. The bike slid to the side of the truck and avoided hitting both the boy and the truck, police said.

The boy was transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center just after noon 12:15 p.m. by the Maysville Emergency Medical Services. Fryman said the boy had minor injuries. The child was wearing a safety helmet while riding his dirt bike when the accident happened, Fryman said.

Fryman said the unidentified driver of the truck was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The driver was not injured in the incident, he said.

According to Germantown Fair Board member and Maysville Mayor David Cartmell, the fairgrounds are privately owned property.

" These are very dangerous bikes for kids. We had a 13 yr.old get killed on his last winter. He rode it all the time without any parent or adult being around. Tried to ride it upon a snowbank and it flipped over and on top of him. The parents were not around. He was suppose to be cleaning his room. So sad, Children today are not disciplined like they should be and this is the result. "

" For the ones of you that don't understand the address system. The fairground has a Dover address. He was not left unsupervised. He lives next to the fair grounds. When you get in a car you take a risk of wrecking, so do you just set at home and do nothing with you life. Except worry about what you can start rumors about? If it was going to happen it would not have mattered where he was or what he was doing. My daughter fell and broke her arm while I was with her. My point being, parents can not prevent all accident and if you say you can you are lying to yourself. "

" Where are the parents of this child? Obviously he didn't drive from Dover to Germantown by himself if he is only 13 years old. Was he just dropped off and left unsupervised? "

" So where was the parental supervision here? Too often I see young kids on dirt bikes or quads despite warnings that such machines are not to be operated by those under the age of 16. And this problem is not limited to rural areas such as the fairgrounds. In the Cedarwood Subdivison is it not at all uncommon to see several youngsters well under the recommended age flying down the street on these things with no parents in sight. Indifference on the part of these parents and law enforcement can only insure that such incidents will continue with tragic results. "

" I just wanted to note that the injury to the boy was not minor. He was later transported to UK Medical Center for a broken femur, and underwent surgery this morning to have a metal rod placed in his leg. "

" People have been told not to ride bikes on the Germantown Fair Grounds by many many people on the fair board. If this child is the one who was told last summer several times not to ride on the grounds by many directors he has been warned about the dangers of riding there. People need to stay off of private property "
