An elderly man is missing and presumed dead after fire struck his home on Lake Charles in Maysville early Sunday, officials said.

Maysville Fire Chief Eric Bach said firefighters responded to the fire at a home located at 208 Lake Charles Road, shortly before 3 a.m. to find the home in flames.

"The home was fully engulfed in flames when we arrived," said Bach.

Bach said the occupant of the Lake Charles residence was Lawrence "Larry" Clark. According to Bach, Clark's family members confirmed that he was in the house at the time of the fire.

Clark's vehicle was still parked at the home after the fire, said Bach. Clark had not been located by late Sunday, according to fire officials.

In addition to the Maysville firefighters, Bach said Kentucky State Police arson investigators and a search team from Erlanger with a cadaver dog, all reported to the scene of the fire in an effort to help the investigation and to locate the victim.

MFD personnel remained at the scene of the house fire, sifting through rubble and debris all day Sunday before calling off the search before dusk..

After remaining at the scene for more than 15 hours, Bach said firefighters would report to the scene early today to continue the investigation and the search.

Jason Allen, a graphic artist who also works weekends at a local night spot, noticed the fire as he returned to his home just after 3 a.m., Sunday, he said.

"I was on my way home from work driving down U.S. 52 when I noticed a glow to my left which shouldn't have been there," said Jason Allen. "As I turned, I saw a large explosion and immediately turned around and drove back to the Harsha Bridge."

Allen said from the bridge, he saw flames from the fire shooting more than 50 feet into the air.

"The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time," said Bach.
