In a surprise ceremony at Wald Park on Monday evening, the children of the late Keith Carver, one of the primary founders of the summer softball league, were presented with autographed baseballs signed by Jim Bunning, U.S. senator from Kentucky and a member of baseball's Hall of Fame. The balls were also signed by U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis and Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson.
Carver, who died in April, and Jimmy Sanders were the forces behind the renovation of Wald Park and the establishment of the softball league for girls in the area.
Before Carver's untimely passing, he and Arthur "Big Boy" Applegate of Tollesboro wanted to surprise the Carver children with the signed collectible and present them at last year's family reunion.
"We planned this last July," said Applegate, who is Vina Carver's (Keith's mother) first cousin. "We also wanted to present Keith's father, Arvell, with his commission to be a Kentucky Colonel, and that was accomplished recently. I know Keith was smiling down on us that day, he was just a tremendous person. But I couldn't get Bunning's autograph until a recent trip to Bowling Green for a convention, and when I told him about Keith, he was very pleased to do this for his children."
Kortney Carver, who will be entering the seventh grade at Mason County Intermediate School in the fall, pitched for her team Monday, and she and her brother, Kyle, and sister, Kacey, who was unable to attend the ceremony, received the long-awaited surprise.
"Big Boy promised Keith that he was going to do this, and if he says something, he will get it done," said a grateful Vina Carver.
